Chess Club Coach

Job Overview

Seattle Preparatory School seeks a Chess Club Moderator/Coach to mentor and guide students in their intellectual and personal growth through the game of chess. The Moderator oversees after-school practices and accompanies students to Metro League tournaments during the fall and winter season.

• Lead and supervise three after-school practices per week, with some flexibility in scheduling.
• Provide instruction, strategy development, and individualized support for players at all levels.
• Accompany and supervise students during Metro League Chess Tournaments (November-January).
• Model curiosity, sportsmanship, and resilience in both practice and competition.
• Foster a welcoming and inclusive team culture that emphasizes growth, respect, and collaboration.
• Communicate regularly with the Student Activities Director and families as needed.
• Maintain consistent attendance and professionalism throughout the season.

• Commitment to Prep's mission and values, especially diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
• Supportive of the mission of a Catholic, Jesuit high school and formation of the whole person.
• Knowledge of chess rules, strategy, and competitive play.
• Affinity for young people and willingness to help them grow as players and people.
• Ability to engage and motivate high school students in a supportive and challenging environment.
• Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.

Practices:
Three days per week after school (flexible schedule).

Competition Season:
November through January (Metro League tournaments).

Salary: $3,500 total paid over the months of the season.
