Position: Seasonal - Recreation Leader 2

Position Summary

The Tukwila Community Center is hiring multiple Recreation Leader 2 positions to support youth day camp, teen day camp, nature camp, activity camps, and senior summer programs. This seasonal role involves assisting with the administration and implementation of summer programs. The positions are temporary, not exceeding 1,040 hours, and are not eligible for health benefits or retirement.

Work Schedule and Hours
  • Up to eight (8) hours per day, up to forty (40) hours per week.
  • Program schedule:
    Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. (shifts may start as early as 7:15 a.m.).
  • Onboarding and training begin in May; program activities begin in June.
  • Attendance must be reliable and consistent during assigned shifts.
Wage

$25.00 per hour.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in direct day-to-day leadership of summer camp and senior programs.
  • Ensure safety and wellbeing of participants and staff while at camp.
  • Safeguard program staff and participants, maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Complete and maintain proper forms, reports, and information for the program, staff, participants, and parents/guardians.
  • Plan, organize, implement, and lead age-appropriate activities and curriculum for camps and senior programs.
  • Coordinate day-to-day operations such as scheduling, seasonal staff, trips, and special events.
  • Build strong relationships with parents, participants, and coworkers.
  • Handle discipline problems with participants according to department procedures.
  • Serve as secondary point of contact for parents and guardians, addressing concerns and providing updates on camp activities and policies.
  • Operate a 15‑passenger van for teen and senior participant trips; clean and maintain the van as required.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

  • Knowledge
    :
    Basic recreation program activities, games, and group activities for youth and adults; hazards and safety practices; emergency procedures; customer service principles; basic record‑keeping practices.
  • Abilities
    :
    • Assist in supervising all aspects of summer camp and senior programming.
    • Work with diverse populations and large groups in a positive, professional, and courteous manner.
    • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, wind).
    • Adapt to changing work assignments and respond to urgent or time‑sensitive tasks.
    • Work independently or as part of a team with limited or no supervision.
    • Provide friendly, positive, and supportive customer service.
    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
    • Establish and maintain positive relationships with participants, volunteers, coworkers, and the public.
    • Follow instructions, policies, and procedures.
    • Exercise good judgment in routine situations.
    • Maintain a safe program environment.
    • Manage stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.
Physical Demands
  • Stand, walk, run, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch; lift, carry, push, or pull equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent use of hands and arms for equipment handling and activity facilitation.
  • Exert up to 75 pounds force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds continuously for set‑up and take‑down of programs or events.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least 21 years old.
  • Minimum two years of experience in a similar environment.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and ability to provide a clean driving abstract.
  • Experience working or volunteering in youth programs, recreation programs, camps, or customer service settings.
  • Physically capable of assisting and participating in physical activities.
  • Strong interest in leading youth activities such as arts, sports, and games.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain before the first day of camp.
Preferred Qualifications
  • College coursework in Recreation, Education, or a related field.
  • Previous experience as a Recreation Leader 1 or 2.
  • Familiarity with recreation program structure, curriculum, or policies.
Required Certifications and Licenses
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certification obtained prior to the first day of camp.
