Position: Assistant Professor in Sustainable Wood Utilization (WOT)

The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) at the University of Washington invites applications for an Assistant Professor (non‑tenure) position, with an anticipated start date of April 2027. The successful candidate will serve on a full‑time, twelve‑month appointment for a three‑year term, renewable for the same period based on available funding.

The base salary range for this position is $9,700–$14,600 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

The position is associated with the Center for International Trade in Forest Products (CINTRAFOR). Candidates are expected to secure external research funding; successful applicants will be primarily supported through acquisition of extramural grants. Partial salary coverage (approximately three months per year) will come from CINTRAFOR state research and outreach funds. Depending on SEFS teaching needs, the role may involve up to two courses per year, including summer teaching, covering 1.3 to 3 months/yr of the candidate’s salary.

The first 24 months of employment will receive full 100% salary support.

The successful candidate will engage in research on the impacts of wood utilization on regional forest product industries, climate change mitigation, and sustainable resource management. The role requires managing a diverse portfolio of research projects and conducting outreach with forest‑dependent communities, industry stakeholders, governmental and non‑governmental organizations, and policy makers.

Teaching and Service

  • Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses on environmental and forest sciences, including bioenergy, biochemicals, and wood products.
  • Participate in the SEFS community that serves approximately 700 undergraduates and 110 graduate students.
  • Contribute to departmental, interdepartmental, and university‑wide service activities.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in forestry, environmental science/engineering, forest economics, forest business, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated focus on wood products and wood utilization (including bioenergy), evidenced by peer‑reviewed publications addressing fundamental and/or applied research at the Ph.D. and/or postdoctoral level.
  • At least two years of postdoctoral research experience in an academic or non‑academic setting.
  • Proven record of securing external grant funding and a demonstrated ability to engage in vigorous fundraising.
