The job of Special Education Assistant/ISE‑203 is to assist in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in the regular classroom or a self‑contained classroom; to implement instructional plans; to monitor student behavior during non‑classroom time; to provide information to appropriate school personnel; and to attend IEP meetings.

Special Education Assistant duties vary according to the school/program needs (e.g., generalist, severe/profound, behavior disorder, hearing impaired, autism). The following describes core responsibilities.

Responsibilities
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under teacher direction to provide opportunities for all special education students to participate.
  • Administer tests, homework, grade sheets, and folders to assist the teacher in evaluating student progress and organizing individual student needs.
  • Provide first aid and medical assistance as required.
  • Assist students with personal care needs due to medical conditions or physical limitations.
  • Attend meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) to acquire and convey information relevant to job functions.
  • Confere with teacher/s (special education and/or mainstream) routinely to evaluate student progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Confere with teachers and/or parents (phone calls, e‑mails, parent‑teacher meetings, progress notes) to provide information on student progress as established in the individualized education program.
  • Direct and implement behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders or other conditions to assist in meeting educational needs and maintain safety.
  • Instruct students in a variety of activities in individual and group settings (academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, etc.) to reinforce instructional objectives and implement remediation plans.
  • Maintain instructional materials and/or student files/records to ensure availability of items and reliable information.
  • Monitor students during assigned periods in various school environments (rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) to aid students and provide a safe learning environment.
Other Functions
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to the building principal if assigned through staffing formulas; if based centrally, reports to the assigned Special Education Supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge

  • Basic mathematics (fractions, percentages, ratios); reading manuals, writing documents in prescribed formats, and presenting information; understanding complex, multi‑step written and oral instructions.
  • Instructional procedures and practices; age‑appropriate student activities; safety practices and procedures; conflict resolution; stages of child development/behavior.

Skills

  • Ability to perform multiple non‑technical tasks with potential learning curve.
  • Adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment; preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Abilities

  • Gather and collate data; use job‑related equipment.
  • Flexibility to work with others in varied circumstances; work with data using defined processes; operate equipment with standardized methods.
  • Work with a wide diversity of individuals; problem‑solve to identify issues and create action plans; moderate problem‑solving with equipment.
  • Adapt to changing work priorities; communicate with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality; work as part of a team; handle constant interruptions; key‑board and use personal computers; basic signing may be required.
