Overview Of Position
Special education classroom teachers work under the general direction of the building principal or program manager and with assistance from appropriate staff personnel. They foster and enhance an effective learning environment; establish and adapt learning objectives and standards for special education students based upon general District guidelines and the rules and regulations governing special education; provide instruction, counsel, discipline, and supervise to meet the individual needs of assigned students;
and evaluate student performance and progress.
- 40% Foster an educational environment conducive to the learning and maturation process of assigned special education students; plan an instructional program designed to meet individual student needs; prepare individual student lesson plans; adapt and modify programs and plans as necessary.
- 15% Use appropriate instructional methods and materials suited to the students and learning activities; implement adapted objectives; attend in‑service training and pursue professional growth.
- 10% Establish and implement classroom policies and procedures governing student behavior; provide guidance, counseling, and discipline; make referrals for assistance as needed.
- 5% Communicate with students, parents or guardians, specialists and other staff; maintain positive relationships to encourage student achievement.
- 10% Establish classroom goals and objectives appropriate to the special education student population; evaluate and record progress; prepare reports for parents or guardians.
- 5% Direct activities of non‑certificated personnel; ensure students' physical, emotional, behavioral, medical, or hygienic needs are met; monitor conditions and behaviors.
- 10% Collect and interpret data; develop, implement, and evaluate individual education plans (IEPs); provide reports for administrative purposes; amend documents when appropriate.
- 5% Attend or participate in all required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the District and/or building principal.
- Serve on staff committees as required.
- Participate in a variety of activities to enhance personal and professional skills.
- Perform related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibilities of the position.
- Attend at least one of two annual Special Education Compliance Professional Development days.
Reports to the building Principal.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of subject areas appropriate to assignment; effective behavior management techniques; effective instructional techniques; rules and procedures for student safety; and rules and regulations governing special education. Skill in reading, writing, and oral communications; effective communication with parents or guardians in a culturally, racially, and economically diverse community; designing and implementing lesson plans for students with a wide range of achievement;
adapting curricula to meet intellectual, social, physical, and emotional needs. Ability to deal with students positively and confidently; remain flexible; organize and manage behavior; maintain a safe learning environment; provide instruction and demonstrate techniques; use necessary equipment and software; direct assistants; administer first aid and CPR when required; use non‑verbal communication methods such as sign language; manage specific disabilities and associated conditions;
establish positive relationships with all stakeholders.
Required to manage a wide range of student achievement and behavior, including various disabilities. Needed to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize, with frequent interruptions. May encounter distraught or difficult students and be exposed to ordinary infectious diseases and bodily fluids. Some positions may require physical activities such as lifting students, restraining, or outdoor accompaniment. May work in a classroom without telephone communication.
