Position: Mercer Int'l Middle - Special Education Teacher (Resource - Math & Study Skills) - 1.0 FTE

Position is assigned to the Resource service pathway. SPS Special Education Department website.

A Special Education endorsement is required and a Math endorsement is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

40% Foster an educational environment conducive to the learning and maturation process of assigned special education students; plan instructional programs, prepare individual lesson plans, and adapt programs as needed.

15% Use suitable instructional methods and materials, implement adapted curricula, attend in‑service training, and pursue professional growth in special education.

10% Establish and enforce classroom policies, provide guidance and discipline, and make referrals for support when needed.

5% Conferring with students, parents, specialists, and staff to maintain positive relationships and encourage achievement.

10% Set classroom goals, evaluate progress, and prepare reports for parents or guardians.

5% Direct non‑certificated personnel and monitor student needs and behaviors.

10% Collect and analyze data, develop and evaluate IEPs, provide administrative reports, and amend documents as appropriate.

5% Attend all required staff meetings and related activities for professional development.

Other Functions
  • Serve on staff committees as required.
  • Participate in activities that enhance personal and professional skills.
  • Perform related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibilities of the position.
  • Attend at least one of two annual Special Education Compliance Professional Development days.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to the building principal.

Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of subject areas appropriate to assignment, effective behavior management techniques, instructional methods, student safety rules, and special education regulations.

Skill in reading, writing, and oral communication; effective communication with diverse families; designing lesson plans for diverse achievement levels; adapting curricula for intellectual, social, physical, and emotional needs.

Ability to work positively with diverse students, maintain consistency, adapt to change, organize activities, manage behavior, use judgment for safety, provide instruction, use equipment and technology, direct assistants, administer first aid and CPR, employ communication techniques such as sign language or Braille, handle specific disabilities, and maintain professional relationships.

Working Conditions

Work with a wide range of student behaviors and disabilities, handle multiple tasks, experience interruptions, manage challenging students, and potentially encounter infectious diseases and hazardous materials. Movements required may necessitate stamina and precautions.

Education and Experience

Must hold a bachelor's degree. Preparation for teaching culturally diverse populations in an urban setting, instruction in special education, and experience with programs for bilingual students, at‑risk students, and behavior change initiatives may be required.

Licenses/Special Requirements

Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Special Education Endorsement. Some positions require first aid and CPR certification or a valid Washington State driver’s license or Class II driver’s license.
