Position: Enrichment Saturday Instructor (Temporary)

Instructor Opportunity at Robinson Center for Young Scholars

The Robinson Center for Young Scholars seeks instructors to develop and teach enrichment courses through the  Enrichment Saturday Program for students currently in grades K-8.

The courses are offered during the  school year (see session dates below) on Saturday mornings at the University of Washington, Seattle campus. Each class lasts 1 or 2 hours, and instructors may teach up to 4 classes per Saturday.

About this Opportunity

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Enrichment Saturday Instructors report directly to the Enrichment Program Manager. This temporary, hourly position involves curriculum internalization and implementation, classroom instruction, working with classroom aides, and attending all required orientation and professional development training.

These classes are intended to provide intellectually ambitious students with challenge, inspiration, and fun, in a collaborative, supportive learning environment. We welcome instructors who have subject matter expertise in STEM, humanities, social sciences, arts, creative writing, and interdisciplinary topics.

The Saturday  session dates are as follows:

  • Pre-session planning and training:
    • Course proposals are due August 3
    • In-person orientation and professional development on September 12th
  • Fall Saturdays:
    September 26 to November 21 (9 days)
  • December Saturdays:
    December 5 and December 12 (2 days)
  • Winter Saturdays:
    January 9 to March 13 (9 days; no classes on February 13)
    • Virtual training on January 6th
  • Spring Saturdays:
    April 17 to June 12 (8 days; no classes on May 29)
    • Virtual training on April 14th

A general hours breakdown is:

  • Teaching up to 4 courses per quarter, 1-2 hours per class
    • 9 classes in Fall
    • 2 classes in December
    • 9 classes in Winter
    • 8 classes in Spring
  • Up to 10 hours of creating and internalizing time per course, as determined by the Program Manager
  • 4.5 hours of prep time per course throughout the Fall and Winter Sessions
  • 1-2 hours of prep time per course for December Session
  • 4 hours of prep time per course for the Spring Quarter
  • Up to 8 hours of new employee training, as assigned by the program manager
  • 6 hours of program-specific orientation and professional development training

Instructors may be required to do additional planning or training based on the specific program needs as determined by the Program Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teaching & Learning:
    Planning, Instruction & Assessment (85%)
    • Maintaining a safe and inclusive classroom environment for a diverse population of students
    • Designing and/or developing the course curriculum for the year with the advice of the Program Manager for Teaching and Learning.
    • Preparing and delivering on time all course materials, including but not limited to course guide, class activities, lesson plans, and supply lists
    • Preparing and delivering classroom instruction
    • Collaborating with student support staff to communicate with families and appropriately support student needs
    • Creating and implementing appropriate differentiation and adaptations to support student engagement with the support of the Enrichment Admin team.
    • Other duties as needed.
  • Program Support, Administrative & Professional Development (15%)
    • Attending all required professional development training;
    • Attending staff orientation prior to the start of the program;
    • Collaborating with classroom aide and instructional coach course development and individualized student plans
    • Receive coaching from the student success team

Required Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity your application must demonstrate you meet both the minimum qualifications and additional qualifications listed below. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least four years of professional experience
  • Able to attend all class sessions and staff orientation for the  season
  • Experience working with K-8 youth

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching K-8 students
  • Experience working with neurodiverse and highly motivated learners
  • Experience delivering engaging, hands-on, and developmentally appropriate lessons to K-8 students
  • Experience working and teaching in a lab setting
  • Experience developing K-8 curriculum
  • Proficient in effective and student-centered communication
  • Subject matter expertise
