Job Purpose

The Special Education Assistant/ISE-203 supports the supervision, care, and instruction of special‑needs students in both a regular classroom and a self‑contained classroom. The assistant implements instructional plans, monitors student behavior during non‑classroom time, provides information to appropriate school personnel, and attends IEP meetings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials to enable participation of all special education students.
  • Administer tests, homework, grading papers, and other materials to assist the teacher in evaluating progress and organizing individual student needs.
  • Provide first aid and medical assistance as required.
  • Support students with personal care needs resulting from medical conditions or physical limitations.
  • Attend meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) for professional development.
  • Collaborate with teachers to evaluate student progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents via phone, e‑mail, or meetings to report on student progress.
  • Direct and implement behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders, ensuring safety and consistency.
  • Instruct students in individual and group settings across academic, social, and daily living skills to reinforce instructional objectives.
  • Maintain instructional materials and student files to ensure availability and reliability of information.
  • Monitor students during assigned periods in various school environments to provide a safe learning environment.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to the building principal if assigned through staffing formulas; otherwise, reports to the assigned Special Education Supervisor.

Knowledge

  • Basic math skills, including fractions, percent, and ratios; reading manuals and writing documents in prescribed formats.
  • Instructional procedures and practices.
  • Age‑appropriate student activities.
  • Safety practices and procedures.

  • Stages of child development and behavior.

Skills

  • Perform multiple non‑technical tasks with the potential need to upgrade skills.

  • Gather and collate data; operate job‑related equipment.
  • Work with a wide variety of individuals and data, maintaining confidentiality.

  • Adapt to changing work priorities and communicate with diverse groups.
  • Work as part of a team and handle constant interruptions.
  • Keyboarding and basic computer use.
  • Basic signing if required.
Working Environment

Typical physical demands include lifting up to 10% of time (up to 50 pounds) and routine stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. The job requires 45% sitting, 25% walking, and 30% standing. Responsibilities may involve caring for medically fragile children, including toileting, diaper changing, tube feeding, and menstrual care. The environment is generally clean and healthy.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent and at least one of the following:

  • Qualifying score on the Education Testing Service para educator assessment.
  • Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Seventy‑two quarter credits or forty‑eight semester credits at the one‑hundred level or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of a registered para educator apprenticeship program.
Years of Relevant Experience

Preferred Experience

Experience working with children.

Certificates & Licenses

Valid State of Washington driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Continuing Education / Training

Secure training in CPR, first aid, and other first responder skills.

Clearances

Criminal Justice fingerprint background clearance.
