Overview of Position
The Special Education Assistant/ISE-203 assists in the supervision, care and instruction of special needs students in the regular classroom or a self‑contained classroom. Responsibilities include implementing instructional plans, monitoring behavior during non‑classroom time, providing information to school personnel, and attending IEP meetings. The role is part of the Extended Resource service pathway. Job duties vary according to the school/program needs, such as generalist, severe/profound, behavior disorder, hearing impaired, autism, etc.
EssentialFunctions
- Adapts classroom activities, assignments or materials to provide opportunities for all special education students to participate.
- Administers a variety of materials and assignments (e.g. tests, homework, graded papers, folders) to assist the teacher in evaluating student progress and organizing individual needs.
- Provides first aid and medical assistance as required to care for injured children.
- Assists students with personal care needs due to medical conditions or physical limitations.
- Attends meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g. first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
- Confers with teachers and/or parents to evaluate student progress and implement IEP objectives.
- Directs and implements behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders or other conditions to meet educational needs and ensure a safe environment.
- Instructs students in academic subjects, social skills and daily living skills to reinforce instructional objectives and support student success.
- Maintains instructional materials and student records to ensure availability and reliable information.
- Monitors students during assigned periods in various school environments (e.g. rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to provide safety and support learning.
- Performs related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.
Reports to the building principal if assigned through staffing formulas; if assigned centrally, reports to an assigned Special Education Supervisor.
Knowledge- Basic math skills including fractions, percentages and ratios; ability to read manuals, write documents in prescribed formats and understand multi‑step written and oral instructions.

Work EnvironmentThe role requires manageable physical demands, including occasional lifting up to 50 pounds, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing and balancing. Tasks may involve toileting, diaper changes, tube feeding, and assisting menstruating students. Typical duties involve 45% sitting, 25% walking, and 30% standing in a clean, healthy environment.
EducationHigh‑school diploma or equivalent and at least one of the following:
- Qualified score on the Education Testing Service (ETS) para‑educator assessment.
- Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
- At least seventy‑two quarter credits or forty‑eight semester credits at the one‑hundred level or higher at an accredited institution.
- Completion of a registered apprenticeship in the para‑educator program.

Certificates and LicensesValid State of Washington Driver’s License or evidence of equivalent mobility.
