Position Summary

Undergraduate Academic Advisors guide students through educational planning and registration processes; assist students in resolving challenges to educational progress; and connect students to information, opportunities, and resources at the University. Academic Advisors advise a caseload of students assigned by academic program, interacting with students individually in scheduled and drop‑in appointments, in small groups, online, and through occasional events and programs. Undergraduate Academic Advisors collaborate with campus partners, faculty, and academic departments to ensure timely and accurate information in support of student success.

This position works as part of an advising center team co‑located in a specific school or college and reporting to the University Advising office. Academic Advisors educate the whole student through holistic and proactive advising services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Academic Advising – 70% of role:
    Engage students through intentional processes of educational and career planning, including exploring/declaring/changing majors and minors, developing course and degree plans that incorporate co‑curricular activities, and guiding students through registration and degree requirement reviews.
  • Assist students with academic and personal adjustment to Seattle University, including outreach to students who are struggling academically, responding to early warning processes, and arranging academic and personal interventions.
  • Provide timely and accurate responses to student inquiries via email or text, maintain accurate records of advising conversations, and track student progress through data collection and analysis in CRM software.
  • Collaboration with Campus Partners – 20% of role:
    Coordinate with assigned academic departments to ensure access to up‑to‑date information, serve as a resource to faculty and campus partners regarding academic policy and procedures, and develop written resources as requested. Participate in campus and university‑wide academic advising initiatives and data collection.
  • Professional and Team Development – 10% of role:
    Participate in internal and external professional development and training opportunities, attend team meetings and activities, support the Lead Advisor and team in coverage of the advising center office, and maintain knowledge of academic policies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of prior experience working in an educational environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties of this job.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work with diverse populations and a commitment to anti‑racist principles and equity.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with excellent listening, writing, and speaking skills.
  • Experience working with students who are academically or personally struggling.
  • Prepared to work in a fast‑paced environment that embraces change and variety.
  • Effective decision making and problem‑solving skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Software such as Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • All positions at Seattle University require a criminal history background check.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree and/or three years of experience in higher education.
  • Experience interpreting, communicating, and applying academic policies.
  • Experience with CRM software, particularly Slate, and other online tools.
  • Knowledge of program development, program evaluation, and student development.
  • Previous experience and skills in the use of student data management systems.
  • Understanding of and appreciation for student success in a Jesuit institution of higher education.
Compensation

$54,000 – $56,000 per year. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, departmental budget, internal equity, and market information, and will not be based on any protected status.
