Job Description

Summary:

The College of Arts & Sciences at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, is recruiting a pool of qualified individuals for possible part-time adjunct teaching appointments with the William & Mary Washington Center in Washington, D.C. The College of Arts & Sciences provides academic oversight while adjunct faculty also have a functional reporting relationship with the Senior Associate Director of the Washington Center, who oversees day-to-day work and operations at the Washington Center.

This pool will be accessed ONLY when an opening arises. Your credentials will remain active as long as the pool position is available but no more than one year. After one year, if you are still interested, you must reapply to the most current adjunct advertisement.

Adjunct faculty teaching in the DC Programs will be responsible for:
  • Teaching assigned undergraduate courses
  • Preparing syllabi and course materials in accordance with academic unit, CAS, and university curricular policies and practices
  • Delivering instruction via modalities designated in the final contract
  • Providing structured assessments of student learning that correspond to course learning objectives and syllabus policies
  • Holding office hours
  • Engage in consistent communication with the Washington Center staff regarding student attendance, participation, and well-being

  • Spring Accelerated Session 1: 1/10/27-3/24/27
  • Spring Accelerated Session 2: 3/10/27-5/24/27
  • Spring Traditional Full Semester: 1/10/2027-5/24/2027
Required Qualifications:
  • A Master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate-level credits in the field of the proposed course of instruction, or equivalent experience and qualifications.
  • Previous experience teaching at a US higher education institution.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. or other appropriate terminal degree, or ABD status, at the time of appointment (August 10 for fall or January 10 for spring).
  • Experience designing coursework for experiential learning programs
Conditions of Employment:
  • This position is also not eligible for work visa sponsorship.
  • This is a restricted part-time position, is restricted to the term in which it is assigned and hired, and is not eligible for benefits.
  • The position may require additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional evenings, weekends, or overnight work as needed to meet operational requirements.
  • Hourlyemployeesare subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program. Total hours worked may not exceed an average of 29 hours per week over a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year.
  • Within Arts & Sciences, adjunct instructional workload limits apply. Total adjunct work hours for part-time employment from May 1 through April 30 may not exceed 1,500 hours,generallyequating to up to 14 credit hours for fall/spring and up to 6 for summer, not to exceed 18 credit hours for the year.
  • Adjuncts within Arts & Sciences at William & Mary must maintain an in-person presence for the duration of their appointment.

Required application materials:

  • Cover letter specifying the courses that you are qualified to offer and would be interested in teaching. The most successful courses connect content to students’ location for the semester in Washington DC. Courses should meet either the learning objectives of COLL 300 or COLL 350 within William & Mary’s general education curriculum. The cover letter should also suggest which CAS academic unit may host your course and your qualifications to teach within that unit.
