Qualifications:

High School Diploma, General Equivalent Development Certificate (GED) per West Virginia Code §18A-2-5 Personnel must be or have been classified in this category or must pass the state prescribed exam for this position per West Virginia Code §18A-4-8e. Demonstrate the physical ability and stamina necessary to complete all job tasks, including those tasks related to insuring student safety. Applicants enrolled in an Autism Mentor program will be given consideration if not Autism Mentor's apply.

Job Summary:

To perform duties to assist teacher and student with daily classroom activities. May be assigned to assist students with school travel

Performance Responsibilities:
Administration of medication to Special Education and Regular Education Students in accordance with West Virginia Code §18-5-22 and a student health care plan. Working with adaptive equipment, prosthetic devices and augmentative communication devices. Participation in and implementation of specialized training, including CPR, First Aide, Passive Restraint, Behavior Management, etc. Working with developmentally disabled students, medically fragile and/or orthopedically impaired students.

Implementation of health care and behavioral plans. Working in a team teaching setting under the supervision of certified professionals. Implementation of intervention techniques, positioning, lifting and handling techniques designed by teacher and related services providers. The use of Physical Intervention and Support Techniques. Maintains positive work habits. Maintains confidentiality. Performs duties efficiently and productively. Maintains and/or upgrades job-related skills. Always develops and maintains a safe work environment.

Instill in students the belief and practice of ethical principles and democratic values. Other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher, building administrator, Special Education Director, or Superintendent. Performs duties as outlined by the classroom teacher. Assist in lifting, feeding, toileting, and changing diapers or clothing of special needs students. Assists teacher as needed with planning, preparation, and distribution of classroom materials.

Conducts learning games with students according to established procedures. Assists with supervision and instruction of children; copying, cutting, coloring, etc., to construct materials and bulletin boards. Provides individualized and small-group instruction to reinforce skills that have been taught by the teacher. Assists in implementing lessons based on district and school objectives and needs and abilities of students. Keeps files of the children's work, test scores, health services, etc.

Prepares routine notices concerning activities, meetings, etc. Conducts activities for students with directions firmly established by the teacher. Monitors testing and classroom tasks assigned to students. Corrects activities assigned to students. Operates audiovisual equipment during instructional duties. Secures materials for instructional programs through proper channels. Prepares material for instruction as outlined by the classroom teacher. Available for consultations with parents.

Complies with in-service training required by Braxton County Schools. Assists the teacher in supervision of children in the classroom and to various locations in the school including, but not limited to, instructional areas, the cafeteria, and the bus. Participates in bus duty, hall monitoring, lunchroom duty, playground duty. Keeps records as needed to accomplish evaluation for programs and sees that all information on students is current and available for review at all times.
