We are expanding our Civil Engineering practice in Seattle and seeking a Civil Engineering Discipline Manager to lead technical excellence, drive growth, and mentor a high-performing team. This is a pivotal leadership role with strategic influence, client ownership, and potential pathway to Principal/ownership (subject to company policies) in a well-established multi-discipline office. As a Civil Engineering Discipline Manager in Coffman Engineers’ Seattle Office, you will be part of a collaborative, creative, and high-performing team focused on client and community impact.
The Civil Engineering Department Manager will set the vision and oversee operations, business development, and project execution for the Civil Engineering Department. The role requires technical leadership, staff development, and client relationship management to ensure high-quality project delivery and team performance.
Responsibilities- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers, designers, and technical staff
- Oversee workload distribution, staffing decisions, and employee performance evaluations
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance work culture
- Manage civil engineering projects from inception to completion, maintaining quality, schedule, and budget adherence
- Provide technical oversight and quality control for designs, reports, and deliverables
- Serve as a subject matter expert in civil engineering design, regulatory compliance, and industry best practices
- Identify and pursue business opportunities
- Develop and maintain relationships with clients, municipalities, and key stakeholders
- Lead proposal development, contract negotiations, and project scope discussions
- Develop and manage department budgets, revenue forecasts, and financial performance
- Oversee efficient resource allocation and utilization within the department
- Monitor project profitability and implement process improvements as needed
- Collaborate with other managers and leadership to contribute to company initiatives, risk management, and office success

Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration required
- Registration in Washington (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
- Registration in Oregon preferred
- Minimum of 12 years of progressive civil engineering site development and management experience including:
- Preparing fee and qualifications-based proposals
- Managing multiple, concurrent projects
- Leading design team efforts
- Successfully managing project budgets and schedules
- Interfacing with a multi-discipline design team
- Mentoring junior staff
- Client management
- Technical experience with hydrologic and hydraulic calculations, technical studies, mapping documents, civil construction documents, and earthwork calculations
- Stormwater experience in Western Washington strongly preferred
- Specification preparation experience
- Excellent communication, client service, and team leadership skills
- Ability to foster long-term client relationships
- Business development experience and ability to help win and grow work
- Prior management experience
- Experience coordinating with a multi-discipline design team
- Experience collaborating with local architectural/engineering community
- Experience with AutoCAD/Civil 3D, Microsoft Office, and related software
- Project experience in Industrial, Federal, and Energy Storage markets
- Experience designing public utilities
- Experience serving as a prime consultant
- Experience with zoning entitlements and permit procurement
- Ability to work with counterparts in other Coffman offices to share workload
- Experience managing day-to-day client contacts using experience and technology to meet expectations
- Participation in local professional organizations
- Experience with Energy Storage Systems
