Position: Structural Analyst II, Fluid Systems - New Glenn Upper Stage & PA

Overview

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond.

Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable. You will be responsible for performing and coordinating structural analysis on the Payload Accommodation Fluid Systems of the New Glenn launch vehicle. This is a hands-on position that involves all aspects of structural analysis, including: configuration development and trade studies, developing novel and efficient approaches to challenging analysis problems, crafting analysis reports to support drawing releases, supporting structural test development, performing post-test analysis, dispositioning manufacturing defects, analyzing structural repairs, and more.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities
  • Complete hand calculation and FEM analyses to report margins of safety for primary and secondary aerospace structures
  • Documentation of stress analysis to support release of engineering drawings / documents
  • Understanding of repair methods and analytical practices for both composite and metallic structure
  • Collaborate closely with designers, providing technical guidance on design concepts (risk vs. cost vs. performance)
  • Supporting cross organizational teams with input for production activities and configuration development
  • Analysis checks for designers and junior structural analysts in stress/stability/fracture analysis and standard processes
  • Improving enterprise analysis capabilities such as crafting process automation tools for model creation, strength checks, and analysis report generation
  • Provide technical guidance and on-site support for manufacturing, production, and integration activities
  • Prepare technical content and present to internal customers
  • Perform research, develop concepts, and run trade studies
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent
  • 3+ years of experience in the structural and dynamic analysis of pressurized components and systems including valves, tubing/piping, pressure vessels
  • Experience with FEA analysis tools (ANSYS preferred) including structural, dynamic, and thermal analyses
  • Working knowledge of 3D CAD programs (Creo / Solidworks / NX)
  • Understanding of FEM modeling techniques (boundary conditions, bolted connections, contact, verification methods)
  • Strong fundamental understanding of structural load paths
  • Knowledge of manufacturing methods, material selection and component testing
  • Familiarity with typical failure modes and standard test methods for both composite and metallic structures (e.g., shear tear-out, net section failure, torsion buckling, interlaminar shear, etc)
  • Ability to use structural hand-calcs to make quick effective decisions
  • Self-motivated with a strong desire to learn, take ownership, and drive projects to completion
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with the analysis of components involving welding
  • Experience with cryogenic systems
  • Experience in the design of fluids components (valves, bellows, COPV's, tubing)
  • Experience in hardware defect resolution
  • Experience with Creo and Windchill
