Overview

What We're Looking For:

The time is right to join HNTB’s growing Design Build Organization. We are seeking candidates for a Sr Bridge Design Manager with demonstrated experience on fast-paced Design Build (DB) infrastructure projects. This role is a key member of project leadership teams, responsible for accomplishing HNTB’s 4 for 4 performance objectives: quality work, on time, on budget, and to the client’s satisfaction.

This opportunity entails leading the development and execution of the project management plan while building and maintaining effective client relationships. The position is a project leader, managing and delivering all aspects of one or more mega ($5M+) and/or super mega ($25M+) projects including technical aspects, operations, contracting, project controls, quality, risk and change management. The Sr Bridge Design Manager implements the firm’s project delivery plan using HNTB's Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA) on each project.

Responsibilities
  • Develop the project scope and fee quotation and assist in the preparation of technical proposals and contracts in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Contracting Approach (SCA).
  • Serve as the primary client liaison and manage the project team to deliver the scope, schedule, and budgets to completion and to the client’s satisfaction. Lead client contract scoping and negotiations.
  • Perform technical discipline tasks including analysis, reports, design, specification, and production for assigned projects.
  • Implement the firm’s project delivery plan using HNTB's Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA). Lead the development and execution of the project management plan. Supervise and mentor the team to achieve overall project objectives.
  • Responsible for/oversees project staffing, including recruitment, development, retention and succession of project staff; develop plans for project staff reporting; and support for performance and compensation reviews.
  • Partner with Client Service Leaders and pursuit champions to assist with business development, building client relationships, and pursuit efforts for mega and super mega projects in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA). Work with the project team and marketing resources to prepare appropriate proposal and presentation materials. Lead proposal development and interview presentations for strategic, mini-mega or mega projects to the client as well as industry and community presentations.
  • May be responsible for recruitment, hiring, development and retention of staff, including development of plans for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 12 years of relevant experience.
  • 4 years of successful management of engineering projects.
Experience and Skills You’ll Bring
  • Excellent technical knowledge and quality work in multidisciplinary projects, including impact assessment of design decisions on cost, fabrication, and construction of bridges and other transportation structures.
  • Proven track record delivering 4for4 (on-time, on-budget, quality, client satisfaction) on multi-disciplined or large/complex projects; strong risk and change management capabilities.
  • Experience leading large teams inside and outside of HNTB using sub-consultants.
  • Proficiency with system tools to manage, monitor, and deliver complex projects.
  • Experience applying HNTB Sophisticated processes to projects.
  • Strong client interface and relationship management.
  • Ability to deploy talent across projects and develop successors to work with the same client on other work.
Preferred
  • Master’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering.
  • 15 years’ experience in design of California bridges and other transportation structures.
  • Proficiency in seismic design and detailing of bridges in California on highway, transit and high-speed rail structures.
  • Experience in managing Design Support During Construction (DSDC) phases of bridge projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in California.
