Overview

Seattle City Light's Generation Electrical Engineering Section is seeking two high performing, licensed Professional Electrical Engineers from any state to join our team. If you're bringing your PE from another state, you will have one year to obtain your Washington State PE by exam or comity. One position is located in Newhalem, Washington, reporting to Newhalem and supporting the day-to-day operations of the three power plants of the Skagit Hydroelectric Project.

The Skagit project is in the North Cascades National Park, with the option to live in the company town of Newhalem depending on space. The other position is located in downtown Seattle, reporting to Seattle Municipal Tower. In both positions, in addition to day-to-day support, you will be assigned capital projects to design and work with field crews to install and test new equipment related to their design.

This position reports to the Generation Electrical Engineering Supervisor. Job Responsibilities

Here is more about what you’ll be doing:

  • Hydroelectric generators, transformers, circuit breakers, governors, and exciters.
  • Balance of plant (BOP) equipment such as batteries, AC power distribution, and SCADA systems.
  • Plant Controls, Automation, and Relay Protection.
  • Equipment auxiliary systems including hydraulic power units, standby generators, and compressors.
  • Spillway and intake gates controls.
  • Troubleshooting, commissioning, inspection, and installation of electrical systems.
  • Lead technical role working with on-site skilled trades.
  • Design review and stamping of electrical design packages.
  • Project estimating, developing, and presenting proposals.
  • Condition assessment, performance monitoring, data analysis, and preventative maintenance in hydroelectric generating stations.
  • Leading multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Managing projects and several concurrent mandates on schedule and within budget.
  • NERC reliability standards as they relate to the operation of Bulk Electric System assets.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and experience with safe work procedures.
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will show a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has:

  • Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience: Total of 6 years of progressively responsible, difficult and highly complex electrical engineering experience in the Power Industry (or other combinations of education and/or experience which provide preparation to do professional electrical engineering work on major electrical power systems).
  • Certification/License: Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of Washington is required. If licensed in another state, may obtain Washington PE by exam or comity within 12 months of hire.
  • Current Washington State Driver’s License or evidence of equivalent mobility.

You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience with hydroelectric generators, associated exciters, governors, relay protection, plant controls and automation.
  • Experience with and commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Knowledge of NERC reliability standards as they relate to Bulk Electric System assets.
  • Operations experience with remote generating facilities.
  • Experience in legacy electrical systems and equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal, technical writing, and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient using AutoCAD to prepare Engineering Design Packages.
