CBTC Signal Engineer
WSP is currently initiating a search for a CBTC Signal Engineer to join our Transit and Rail/Systems Engineering team in our Seattle, WA Office.
The CBTC Signal Engineer provides specialized technical support and oversight of both CBTC and fixed‑block signaling systems for the program. This position ensures that signal designs, interlocking logic, and mixed‑mode block configurations are reviewed, validated, and approved in compliance with operational principles and safety standards.
The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of both traditional relay‑based signaling and CBTC software‑based interlocking logic, with hands‑on experience supporting Sound Transit projects. This role serves as a vital liaison between the supplier, designer, and the agency to facilitate design acceptance, support test readiness, and ensure system safety and operational continuity throughout the migration to CBTC.
Your Impact- Provide technical review and approval of block design drawings and documentation for mixed‑mode (CBTC and fixed‑block) operation.
- Serve as the primary liaison between the CBTC supplier, designer, and agency operations for all matters related to signal design coordination and block approval.
- Review and assess interlocking logic implementation within both the relay‑based fixed‑block design and CBTC subsystem software, ensuring operational and safety compliance.
- Review and approve test procedures related to interlocking logic, signal aspects, and control sequences to confirm compliance with authority requirements.
- Evaluate software state machine logic used to implement interlocking functions in CBTC subsystems and ensure proper alignment with agency signaling principles and operational rules.
- Provide assurance that signal design changes maintain interoperability, safety integrity, and system maintainability during migration from fixed‑block to CBTC control.
- Support interface alignment between CBTC zone controller logic, relay interlockings, and field signal equipment.
- Participate in design and field review meetings with Engineering, Operations Planning, and Maintenance teams to address design, testing, and configuration issues.
- Track and report on signal design deliverables, test progress, and open design comments requiring agency review or resolution.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required to support the successful integration, validation, and acceptance of the CBTC and fixed‑block signaling systems.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, systems, or railway engineering; a minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in fixed‑block and CBTC signaling system maintenance and/or design may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Proven record of reviewing, approving, and coordinating block design packages for mixed‑mode signaling operation.
- Experience developing or reviewing interlocking logic test procedures and software state machine implementations.
- Strong understanding of signal principles, operational practices, and legacy control systems.
- Prior involvement in at least one major CBTC deployment or migration project.
- Ability to work during off‑hour testing or commissioning as needed.
- Ability to support field reviews, test witnessing, and agency coordination meetings.
- Flexibility to perform additional responsibilities as assigned to ensure program success.
- Full understanding of vital and non‑vital signal logic, relay‑based control circuits, and their translation into CBTC subsystem software.
- Working knowledge of interlocking design, block layouts, overlap logic, and control line functions.
- Understanding of test sequencing, verification, and validation of signaling systems within mixed‑mode operation.
- Technical knowledge:
- Full understanding of vital and non‑vital signal logic, relay‑based control circuits, and their translation into CBTC subsystem software.
- Working knowledge of interlocking design, block layouts, overlap logic, and control line functions.
- Understanding of test sequencing, verification, and validation of signaling systems within mixed‑mode operation.
- Exceptional analytical and diagnostic skills for reviewing detailed…
