This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products.To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.
This individual will use their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to join our team and positively impact safe human spaceflight. You will work directly with NASA and our National Team Partners as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program. You will play a key role in developing the Lunar Permanence system that will return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently beyond the bounds of Earth.
This opportunity will support the Heavy Cargo Lander inside of the Lunar Permanence business unit. Responsibilities:
Lead development of structural and mechanical subsystems throughout the entire design cycle, including conceptual and detailed design, trade studies, structural analysis, development testing and qualification
Generate 3-D models, component drawings, assembly drawings, and interface control documents
Create documentation for assembly and testing of development and flight hardware
Participate in subsystem level testing including planning, execution, data reduction and analysis
Develop component specifications and manage suppliers
Coordinate and oversee manufacturing and production activities
Facilitate the development and purchase of new equipment and tooling
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to produce world class aerospace hardware
Lead design reviews
Mentor junior engineers in structural design principles and best practices
Develop innovative solutions to complex structural challenges
Ensure designs meet all requirements for performance, safety, and reliability
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in engineering
Minimum of 7 years of experience in design & development of large aerospace structures
Knowledge in material selection, compatibility, and manufacturing techniques
Strong mechanical design and integration skills using 3D CAD software
Comprehension of classical stress analysis methods
Familiar with application of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and variation analysis
Experience leading a team of engineers
Proven track-record of managing projects to meet schedule, budget, and technical performance metrics
Ability to earn trust and maintain positive professional relationships.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to apply structural mechanics principles and develop designs using hand calculations and finite element analysis
Proficiency in Creo (Pro/E) Wildfire 5 or greater, Windchill 10
Expertise with analysis codes:
Nastran, ANSYS, Optistruct, LS/Dyna, AbaqusKnowledgeable in metallic and composite design and analysis considerations
Experience with rapid development techniques for hardware
Familiarity with systems engineering practices, manufacturing fabrication and assembly processes, and quality control
Experience with Optimization and DOE methods as applied to design, analysis, and testing
Experienced with fabrication of composite primary structures for aerospace
Experience working in a cross-functional team responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and developing the design to produce world-class engineered products
Proven experience developing manufacturing processes for transition to production
