Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.
As part of a passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will be responsible for the planning, execution, and validation of high-performance Composite Over wrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs) and other pressurized composite structures for the New Glenn program. Your work will directly validate the structural integrity and performance of flight-critical hardware. This role requires a creative and hands-on approach to pioneer rapid test solutions that will accelerate our development timeline.
Our team is at the forefront of developing the key technologies that will enable Blue Origin's vision of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.
Responsibilities:
- Own the end-to-end planning, execution, and data analysis for testing pressurized composite structures from development through qualification.
- Author detailed test plans, procedures, and work instructions for component and assembly-level tests, including proof, burst, cycle, and damage tolerance testing.
- Conceive of and design structural and fluid test support equipment, fixtures, and control systems needed to execute tests safely and effectively.
- Create 3D models and engineering drawings for test fixtures and support equipment using Creo and Windchill.
- Develop and implement innovative and rapid testing techniques to accelerate the design and development lifecycle, reducing time from test concept to data delivery.
- Specify and integrate data acquisition systems (DAQ) and sensors, including pressure transducers, strain gauges, and thermocouples, to meet test objectives.
- Work hands-on with technicians to perform test setups, checkout, and execution, ensuring safe operations and troubleshooting issues with test articles and facilities.
- Lead Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs) and conduct post-test data reviews to ensure validity and completeness.
- Reduce, analyze, and interpret test data, presenting results clearly to design and analysis teams to inform design decisions and correlate analytical models.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Aerospace, or a related engineering field.
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience planning and executing structural, mechanical, or fluids testing.
- Experience with test facility components such as hydraulic/pneumatic systems, high-pressure fluid panels, and data acquisition systems.
- Experience designing test fixtures or mechanical hardware using 3D CAD software (Siemens NX/Teamcenter preferred).
- Familiarity with various sensor types and their application (strain gauges, pressure transducers, thermocouples, LVDTs).
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics (P&IDs).
Desired:
- Master of Science in a relevant engineering field.
- Direct experience testing Composite Over wrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs) or other high-pressure composite structures.
- Experience with cryogenic testing and handling of cryogenic fluids (LN2, LHe).
- Proficiency with data analysis and scripting languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB).
- Experience operating and troubleshooting complex fluid and data acquisition systems.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage projects in a fast-paced, iterative design environment.
- Strong project management skills and experience leading test campaigns from start to finish.
