At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products.

To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a hardworking team of specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will perform as a specialist Systems Engineer (SE) in the field of micrometeoroids and orbital debris (MMOD). The MMOD SE plays a critical role in defining and maturing shielding for Blue Origin's lunar landers through their design and verification life cycle. Your focus will be on MMOD analysis, hyper-velocity ballistic test development, and flight hardware definition.

The Structures subsystem is a hardware-delivery-focused subsystem, and the SE is expected to have relevant testing and hardware experience. Additionally, with Blue Origin's vision to enable crew exploration of the Moon, subsystem safety assessment is paramount and will be a key aspect of the SE role given its systemic reach and implication.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop finite element models and probabilistic risk assessments using commercial and NASA analysis codes.
  • Lead studies balancing integrated system considerations and MMOD risk. Identify technical solutions to integrated problems and generate analysis reports with technical justification.
  • Develop requirements and flow technical specifications to components.
  • Define hypervelocity impact test campaigns including specifying test parameters, coordinating with suppliers, hardware specification and build oversight, and test data analysis.
  • Embody, promote, and coach the Blue Origin leadership principles.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in spaceflight hardware design, integration, analysis, and testing.
  • Experience with systems engineering.
  • Working knowledge of MMOD principles, including environment characterization, shielding design concepts, and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills including technical documentation, presentation, and test plan development.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or another technical field.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience in a rapid prototyping, manufacturing, or production environment.
  • Knowledge of hypervelocity impact test principles and methods.
  • Knowledge of MMOD probabilistic analyses and model definition, including familiarity with ballistic limit equations.
  • Proficiency in MMOD analysis and simulation tools (Bumper 3, ORDEM, MEM, DAS, LS-DYNA, CTH, etc.).
  • Experience with CAD and FEA meshing tools (CREO, Solid Works, NX, Hyper Mesh, FEMAP, etc.).
  • Proficiency in programming languages (Python, MATLAB, etc.).
  • Experience with crewed spaceflight systems.
  • Direct professional experience developing MMOD shielding solutions, conducting risk assessments, or performing hypervelocity impact testing.
  • Master's degree in engineering or another technical field.
