We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer with extensive experience in energy storage system design, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), to support AWS data center power delivery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop designs and analysis of different energy storage technologies, including battery energy storage systems, long-duration energy storage systems, and utility-scale energy storage.
  • Support the integration of energy storage systems with different power sources, such as electric utilities, diesel generators, reciprocating engines, gas turbines, fuel cells, microgrids, distributed energy resources, and renewable energy, to serve data center loads in grid‑connected or grid‑independent configurations.
  • Develop control integration strategies and designs, sequence of operations, and protection and relay schemes for energy storage systems.
  • Develop acceptance criteria, test procedures, performance requirements, supplier requirements, and integration designs for energy storage systems, components, and products.
  • Understand the design and functionality of the global data center fleet, including existing, upcoming, and unique site designs.
  • Interpret, evaluate, and develop single line drawings (SLD), engineering drawings, equipment submittals, equipment specifications, documentation, and performance data to advance concepts and solutions.
  • Provide feedback to the Design Engineering teams for design revisions for new data centers as well as to Field Engineering for operational data center upgrades.
  • Work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
  • Be a leader within the group as well as within other teams.
  • Offer creative, out‑of‑the‑box solutions and maintain a positive attitude.
About the Team

The Power Generation Solutions team creates and delivers product and engineering solutions for power and energy to help advance AWS’ mission to deliver world‑leading cloud services. Guided by four main principles – unlocking capacity growth, maintaining high infrastructure uptime, minimizing infrastructure costs, and advancing our net‑zero carbon Climate Pledge – the team provides technical input to realize a shared vision and strategy with partner teams and offers engineering support across project or product life cycles.

The team also manages grid analytics and develops models for determining total energy and water use within AWS’ fleet of data centers.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • 6+ years of experience leading energy storage designs for utility‑scale or complex mission‑critical facilities combined with 4+ years of design or operational support for energy storage systems.
  • In‑depth knowledge of continuous operating redundant electrical systems and power infrastructure, including but not limited to uninterruptable power sources, medium and low voltage electrical switch gear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, and automatic/static transfer switches.
  • Experience and knowledge of inverter controls, EMS, and closed‑loop control optimization.
  • Experience and knowledge of medium‑voltage and high‑voltage equipment, including substation configurations, protection requirements, and integration of energy storage systems.
  • Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, single and three‑line diagrams, submittals, sequence of operations, and electrical drawing packages.
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer.
  • 10+ years of direct experience with the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of mission‑critical data centers or power infrastructure, with an understanding of electrical equipment and designs related to data centers.
  • Familiarity with power flow studies, substation design, protection coordination, and utility interconnection requirements, emerging power generation and energy storage technologies, and power distribution for large‑scale mission‑critical facilities, including microgrid design and controls, and distributed energy resources.
  • Experience and knowledge of power generation equipment, systems, and controls, including diesel generators, distributed energy resources, gas turbines, and renewable energy.
