As a member of the Engineering team in Metro’s Capital Division, the Structural Engineering V performs advanced level engineering for both major and smaller Transit facility capital projects, including the preparation of engineering designs, specifications, and design reports. The role assists project managers with the establishment of project budgets and schedules and performs quality control reviews of consultant designs. King County Metro seeks an innovative, collaborative Structural Engineer to serve as a resource for the structural group, providing advanced level design, design overview, and mentoring to a growing team while also supporting Transit Planners in developing integrated multi‑modal transportation facilities.

ResponsibilitiesApplying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. In this role you will apply equity and social justice principles to all aspects of the work.
- Develop and analyze project alternatives, prepare civil engineering designs, specifications, and cost estimates for transit facility capital projects, primarily for transit base facilities and bus passenger facilities (bus stops, transit centers, and park and‑rides).
- Prepare pre‑design and alternative analysis reports for structural engineering projects.
- Manage and mentor junior engineers, providing guidance and expertise in structural engineering principles.
- Review and approve structural designs and calculations prepared by the team.
- Prepare drawings, technical specifications, and cost estimates for structural work.
- Model effective interpersonal, communication and leadership skills including listening, motivating, managing conflicts or crises with courage and composure, and dealing with difficult problems with flexibility and adaptability.
- Promote teamwork, inclusion and a cooperative environment while recognizing the value of diversity of opinion, culture, and perspective.
- Coordinate structural engineering designs with mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering groups.
- A major part of the work to be performed in this position involves structural design, review, and calculations.
- Review and provide quality assurance on consultants pre‑design reports, designs, specifications, and cost estimates for structural engineering projects.
- Assist project managers with the establishment of and modifications to project scopes, budgets, and schedules.
- Perform the duties of a project engineer on multidisciplinary projects.
- Assist project managers and construction inspectors with engineering support during construction, including submittal reviews and field inspections.
- Work with Metro Transit stakeholder groups and local, state, and regulatory agencies to resolve problems, perform analytical services, prepare construction documents and address issues related to existing and planned facilities.
- Provide direction to other structural engineers and designers.
- Provide support to maintenance personnel as requested.
- Participate in design charrettes and reviews as requested.
- Develop or support the development of Scopes of Work including Level of Effort Estimates, Deliverables List, Bid Evaluation Criteria, and other consultant and/or construction contracting requirements.
- Perform various tasks associated with projects.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering from a nationally accredited university, active Professional Engineer registration and Structural Engineer registration at the time of hire and at least ten years’ experience as a design structural engineer with demonstrated success working on multidisciplinary engineering projects, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, with the required registration, that provides evidence of full ability to perform the duties of the position.
Candidates with Professional Engineer and Structural Engineer licenses in other states will be required to secure professional registration in the State of Washington within six months of employment.
