Position: Second Assist Engineer on Commercial Fishing Vessel - F/T Alaska Ocean

Glacier Fish Company Overview

Glacier Fish Company is dedicated to producing the highest quality frozen-at-sea groundfish products in the world. We operate two crawler‑catcher‑processor vessels that work in the Bering Sea and off the coast of Washington and Oregon.

Requirements
  • 2+ years of experience as an Oiler/Wiper or 3rd Assistant preferred
  • Work 12‑13 hrs/day, 7 days/week in all weather conditions
  • Repetitively lift and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Self‑motivated team‑player
  • Understand instructions and safety rules in English
  • Must provide 2 recent positive references from previous employers
  • Capable of climbing and descending steep stairs and vertical ladders
  • Share spaces with others including crew quarters, dining areas, and bathrooms
Job Responsibilities
  • Familiar with all vessel equipment and systems, recognize normal operation of all equipment.
  • Perform scheduled rounds, fill out and maintain engine room log book, oil record book, sewage discharge and EPA logs.
  • Bunkers fuel, lube and waste oil, including transfers on vessel, maintain correct tank levels and logs.
  • Monitors and performs scheduled maintenance per operational hours or timed intervals on engine room equipment; perform daily checklist of equipment and routine cleaning.
  • Maintain proper oil and water levels and manage filtration in all propulsion equipment; main engines, reduction gears, PTO gears, servo system, bow thruster engine and gear.
  • Monitor and maintain correct water treatment dosing for engines and boiler.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and greasing of vessel steering system, hydraulic power pack, rudders, rams, bearings and blocks.
  • Maintain oil levels, manage filtration and perform scheduled services on all vessel auxiliary equipment; air compressors, auxiliary generator engines, hydraulic systems.
  • Operate and maintain lube and fuel oil purifiers.
  • Operate and maintain main refrigeration plant.
  • Operate and maintain auxiliary refrigeration plants, RFW, Glycol, ship service and electronics room AC.
  • Perform and log scheduled leak checks on all refrigeration equipment.
  • Operate and maintain all sewage and grey‑water equipment, all HVAC plant and filtration equipment.
  • Maintain all non‑factory electrical motor and generator bearings.
  • Perform maintenance and greasing of all LP deck machinery and pneumatics, excluding control system.
  • Manage oil levels and filtration of deck cranes.
  • Maintain all HP hydraulic equipment, pump units and filtration, all deck machinery, excluding factory motors and actuators.
  • Maintain ship’s skiff and davit system in safe operating condition.
  • Operate and maintain vessel RO water makers and filtration; manage freshwater production and chlorine dosing.
  • Fabricate basic machining operations as needed.
  • Recognize potential issues outside scope of responsibility and communicate up the chain of command.
  • Understand production plant equipment and product flow; assist factory engineers with repairs of all production plant equipment.
  • Maintain organized and clean engineering spaces as directed by 1st Engineer or Chief Engineer.
  • Maintain vessel hand‑tool inventory and ensure all tools are returned in good order.
  • Communicate respectfully with all vessel crew.
  • Apply company safety manual and procedures, including proper PPE, SDS structure and vessel lock‑out/tag‑out procedures.

Salary and Compensation

$103,000 – $125,000 per year. Pay is a crew share which can vary each trip. Trip lengths range between 13‑24 days on average, depending on fishing conditions. Trip numbers and pay are split with relief second‑assistant engineers. Regular shipyard work rotation occurs while the vessel is in port between fishing seasons.
