Position: Strategic Tech Transfer Supervisor (Electrical Engineering Supervisor)

Overview

City Light’s Electrification and Strategic Technology Division oversees the Utility’s efforts related to transportation and building electrification, grid modernization, and strategic technology. The Strategic Technology Transfer (STT) team works on electrification, flexible load projects, supporting customer innovation and emerging technology projects with grid benefits, transit bus electrification, and grant-funded studies. The STT team works closely with and provides support to work groups across the utility, including Engineering, Operations, Customer Energy Solutions, as well as teams within the Electrification and Strategic Technology Division, including Building Electrification, Transportation Electrification, Grid Modernization, and The Lab at City Light.

Seattle City Light is seeking a Strategic Tech Transfer Supervisor to supervise a team of subject matter experts and be responsible for supporting the implementation of new technology projects and supporting City Light customers as they increase their electrification.

This position will report to the Executive Director of The Lab at City Light, Seattle City Light’s externally-facing technical training and education resource.

Responsibilities
  • Perform and supervise the evaluation and implementation of new state-of-the-art technologies, including complex engineering analysis and tests of incumbent and emerging electrical and mechanical building systems and materials to determine performance, efficiency, and grid impact.
  • Participate in and lead the design and demonstration of building and grid-connected electrical and mechanical systems that support the management of energy.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for new strategic technologies being deployed across the electric utility industry and adopted by customers, including representing City Light at industry forums, publications and technical committees.
  • Facilitate participation by commercial and industrial facility owners in City electrification work.
  • Develop criteria for new technologies relating to demand side management, load flexibility, and renewable energy; research engineering test procedures and establish technical specifications.
  • Apply standard engineering protocols to establish energy performance calculation methodologies and procedures.
  • Compile and facilitate cost estimates, feasibility, and pilot studies.
  • Provide technical assistance to other departmental units regarding electrification.
  • Advise internal and external stakeholders on specifications and policy adoption related to City, regional, and national codes, standards, and policies.
  • Identify and manage grant funded projects; support the Policy and Grants Strategic Advisor in writing grant proposals, work plans and budget estimates.
  • Manage consultants where required, including recruitment, scoping, procurement, contracting, change orders, and payment.
  • Lead a team of full‑time, temporary, and contract staff performing the work identified above; participate in position design and hiring; set expectations, provide direction, review performance, and support development; identify and acquire the resources needed to support changing workloads.

Required Qualifications
  • Six years of professional electrical engineering experience, including two years of supervisory experience.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Experience with new grid technology asset implementations, customer service connections, and utility operations.
  • Advanced technical writing and project management skills, including designing and documenting processes and procedures, and writing specifications and standards.
