Office/Field Engineer

Department: Operations

Employment Type: Full Time

Reporting To: Octavio Bailon-Schubert

Compensation: $88,000 - $92,000 / year

Description

The Office/Field Engineer serves as a link between field operations and project management. In the preconstruction phase, they support planning and estimating efforts, then transition into field management as construction begins. Throughout the project, engineers assist superintendents by interpreting plans and specifications, coordinating and managing subcontractors, tracking quantities, and maintaining as-build documentation, while helping ensure safety and quality standards are consistently met.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

PRECONSTRUCTION
  • Evaluate design documents to ensure the project can be built as designed and identify potential issues, particularly regarding soil conditions, underground utilities, and structural integrity.
  • Develop detailed, accurate cost models that encompass materials, specialized labor, equipment rentals, and contingency funds.
  • Identify cost-saving alternatives that maintain quality, such as finding more efficient construction methods or materials.
  • Research, prepare, and submit necessary permits (environmental, traffic, building, right-of-way) and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conduct site visits to review existing conditions and identify potential obstacles.
  • Identify materials and equipment with long lead times.
  • Identify, vet, and select specialized subcontractors and suppliers based on experience and capability.
  • Identify potential project risks (financial, safety, environmental, or logistical) and create strategies to minimize them.
FIELD ENGINEERING AND COORDINATION
  • Coordinate with the project superintendents regarding daily schedules including people, equipment, materials, subcontractors, suppliers, etc.
  • Act as a liaison between project management and field employees on schedules, changes in scope of work, and conflict resolutions.
  • Request submittals and shop drawings as required.
  • Document any delays and/or changes to scope of work.
  • Process change orders as needed.
PRODUCTION AND COST TRACKING
  • Collect and enter daily quantities.
  • Track daily production, analyze actual versus budgeted costs/materials, and verify quantity takeoffs.
  • Prepare and submit subcontractor pay forms.
SAFEY AND QUALITY COMPLIANCE
  • Ensure field crews follow safety policies, participate in daily/weekly meetings, and prepare Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
  • Ensure compliance with Company safety policies and OSHA safety standards.
PROJECT DOCUMENTATION
  • Manage RFIs, submittals, material procurement, and scheduling, ensuring work complies with project specifications and drawings.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Construction Management or a related field.
  • Availability to work occasional nights/weekends.
  • U.S. Drivers License in good standing.
  • Ability to occasionally travel for Corporate Events and Training Functions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Multi-tasks and stay focused on the big picture while addressing daily issues.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good organization and communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate with field superintendents and craft personnel.
  • Work with a diverse group of individuals and organizations representing public agencies, private utilities, subcontractors and suppliers.
PREFERENCES
  • 1 – 3 years of experience within similar heavy civil construction environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, Box and other construction related software’s and cloud base applications.
  • Proficiency with CAD software, surveying equipment, and project management software
