Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is actively searching for an exceptional and experienced Senior Safety and Health Professional to join the Safety team. This position supports general safety, health, and environmental functions focusing on construction and industrial hygiene efforts while partnering with leadership and front‑line staff. You will work alongside other safety team members, collaborating on projects and working independently. The role plays a crucial part in identifying potential risks and implementing effective controls to keep employees safe.

Seattle Public Utilities is a community‑centered utility that delivers vital services to Seattle residents and businesses including drinking water, drainage and wastewater, and garbage/recycling/compost. SPU provides drinking water for 1.6 million customers and works on system maintenance and improvements to keep Seattle clean. Over 1,400 employees collaborate with the community to provide affordable and equitable stewardship of water and waste resources for future generations.
Policy& regulatory compliance
- Develop, implement, and administer occupational safety and health policies and procedures which may include industrial hygiene programs.
- Research, interpret, and apply federal and state safety and industrial hygiene regulations.
- Conduct job site and facility safety audits; investigate accidents and unsafe conditions and recommend corrective actions.
- Evaluate construction, ergonomics, and industrial hygiene programs; utilize noise dosimeters, air monitors, and related equipment.
- Develop Job Safety Analyses and coordinate safety training on Seattle Public Utilities programs and procedures for supervisors and employees.
- Educate and collaborate with staff and leadership on safety best practices.
- Support and review Trenching and Excavation and Fall Protection Workplans, Confined Space Permits.
- Develop Health and Safety plans for special projects coordinating with project managers.
- Ensure enforcement of safety regulations through line supervisors and management.
- Partner with safety committees, department heads, and City, state, and federal officials to implement safety programs.
- Attend dispatch, operations, and leadership meetings to promote safety practices and policies.

ExperienceThree (3) years of experience in a safety or health related field or equivalent field.
EducationA Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Toxicology, Industrial Hygiene, Biology, Engineering, or another related field. Combinations of appropriate education, training, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability to the minimum education and experience requirements.
Work Environment/Physical Demands- Required to wear personal protective equipment, follow safety procedures and exercise caution during inspections.
- Requires being on call 24 hours/day for response to emergencies.
- Work is performed in both office and at jobsites.
- Required to be part of the safety office standby rotation for emergency response.
- At the time of appointment must hold a valid Washington State Driver License, or ability to do so within 30 days of hire date.
- Experience developing Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in an operations environment.
- Experience with database management and creating safety reports.
- Effective oral and written communication skills at all levels of an organization.
