The Opportunity
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Function in a lead wastewater process engineer role as a technical specialist in conventional wastewater treatment processes such as physical/chemical primary treatment, activated sludge, biological nutrient removal, fixed-film processes, membrane bio-reactors (M ), sidestream treatment, tertiary filtration, and disinfection.
- Provide technical guidance over a process team, supervise engineering staff on projects, and collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams to implement complex treatment solutions.
Black & Veatch Process Engineers develop technical solutions that are critical to winning work and drive design deliverables for critical infrastructure projects with community benefits. Our team of over 200 process engineers supports water, industrial, next‑generation agriculture, LNG, hydrogen, fertilizer, and carbon capture businesses.
Key ResponsibilitiesEngineering:
- Prepare diverse engineering deliverables including process models, mass balance calculations, design criteria/memoranda, flow diagrams, P&IDs, trade‑off studies, and master planning studies.
- Support multiple projects simultaneously with complex technical challenges.
- Serve as a technical specialist, providing guidance to project teams in conventional and emerging wastewater treatment systems.
- Perform complex research, including bench, pilot, and full‑scale testing to select or assess performance of treatment processes, and incorporate data into process models.
- Develop recommendations for treatment processes, equipment, and materials selection.
- Oversee collection, assimilation, analysis, and management of data for process modeling and design work.
- Prepare process models and carry out complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles.
Client Focus:
- Assist in identifying key client interests and drivers for ongoing projects and new business prospects.
- Communicate client interests to project team members and develop creative solutions aligned with client objectives.
- Support business development or pursuit activities, including pre‑positioning meetings, proposal development, client interviews, and identification of winning sales messages.
- Attend and present on state‑of‑the‑art wastewater treatment projects at local, regional, and national conferences.
People Management:
- Mentor junior engineers and foster knowledge management.
- Assist with performance management, mentoring, recognition, and performance improvement actions for junior engineers.
- Participate in coaching opportunities, career development planning, learning/training, and development of junior staff.
Engineering Standards:
- Provide guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, and applicable engineering codes related to water quality and treatment.
- Assist in developing, maintaining, and updating engineering standards and provide technical guidance to others.
Quality / Continuous Improvement:
- Independently apply knowledge and comply with Black & Veatch quality program relative to assigned tasks.
- Ensure compliance with Black & Veatch quality program.
- Provide related guidance and direction to others.
- Support continuous improvement and change management efforts.
- Coordinate with internal and external team members on moderately complex projects.
Resource Management (budgets, tools, processes, project support):
- Implement resource management strategy.
- Manage engineering resources for small groups.
Administrative:
- Ensure policies, procedures, and processes are effectively implemented and communicated for work groups.
- Maintain adherence to corporate and division programs.
- Approve expense reports as required.
- Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctoral) in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering preferred.
- 10 years of experience in wastewater treatment with at least 5 years in water quality and treatment, including regulatory compliance assessments.
- Advanced knowledge of process design for municipal wastewater, engineering design principles, and applicable design guides and standards.
- Experience with modern process simulators such as Bio Win, GPS‑X, Sumo, and/or Simba.
