Senior Fisheries (Passage) Engineer

Stantec is seeking a Senior Fisheries (Passage) Engineer to support water resources, dams and hydropower infrastructure projects from its Bellevue, Washington or Portland, Oregon offices with a hybrid work schedule. The role works collaboratively with project teams in the Energy & Resources and Water Business Operating Units to deliver local and regional projects, and occasionally national or international projects. The focus is serving as a senior technical lead or resource in the execution of fish screening and fish passage infrastructure at water intakes, dams, spillways, and hydropower facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as Senior Technical Resource, Technical Lead, or Engineer of Record for fish passage and screening infrastructure, leading or reviewing projects.
  • Provide subject‑matter expert (SME) and technical advisory leadership for fisheries infrastructure on water resources, dams and hydropower projects.
  • Plan, organize, and manage the production of project deliverables to ensure on‑time delivery, technical quality, and budget compliance.
  • Act as the project’s fisheries engineering technical point of contact with clients, agencies, and others.
  • Mentor and direct developing professionals to guide execution of work and career development objectives.
  • Manage and review team work, providing technical guidance on design approaches and challenges.
  • Perform quality management on technically complex projects and serve as a technical resource by providing guidance to other team members.
  • Recognize technical problems and initiate corrective action guidance.
  • Ensure work is executed safely and promote health and safety inside and outside the office while visiting clients and job sites.
  • Support Business Development Activities by understanding market and business conditions, developing marketing strategies, and assisting with technical approaches for Statements of Qualifications and Proposals.
  • Develop positive relationships with clients, earning their confidence and becoming a trusted adviser.
Capabilities and Credentials
  • Experience in planning, designing, and constructing fish passage and screening engineering facilities associated with dams, spillways, intakes, outlet works, and hydroelectric power plants.
  • Good technical knowledge of fish passage/transport, collection, and screening facilities.
  • Skilled technical leader and team player capable of building internal and external relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills: verbal, business writing, electronic communications, and presentations.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and hold team accountable for delivery of innovative design solutions.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to make timely decisions and develop others.
  • Knowledge of national, state, and local codes, standards, and permitting requirements related to fish passage and screening engineering.
  • Ability to develop unique design solutions that meet client needs with a sound understanding of overall goals, objectives, and costs.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering from an accredited institution (Master’s preferred).
  • 10+ years of professional experience in fish passage and screening engineering for water resources, dams, and hydropower projects.
  • Existing Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and/or California professional engineer registration (P.E.) or ability to obtain within six months of starting work.
Pay Range
  • Locations in WA, DC & Various CA, MA, VA Areas – $ – $ annually

In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. Certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part‑time roles will be pro‑rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
