Water Resources Engineer

Location:

King County Wastewater Treatment Division, Seattle, Washington, United States.

We are seeking a Water Resources Engineer (Engineer II) for the King County Wastewater Treatment Division. The role focuses on flood hazard identification and mapping, hydraulic and hydrologic studies, and support for watershed restoration projects across King County.

The position sits within the Water & Land Resources Division, River and Floodplain Management Section. As a team member you will apply 1‑D/2‑D hydraulic modeling, hydrologic and GIS analyses, conduct field data collection, review engineering proposals, and assist with floodplain mapping projects. You will collaborate with senior hydraulic engineers, planners, ecologists, and external agencies such as Seattle Public Utilities, USGS, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

• Assist senior staff with hydrologic analyses, 1‑D and 2‑D hydraulic modeling, and GIS analysis.
• Act as task manager for floodplain mapping projects, producing maps, profiles, and floodplain elevations for FEMA and non‑FEMA studies.
• Maintain and review technical documents and floodplain compliance reports.
• Evaluate hydraulic modeling inputs, outputs, and parameters.
• Plan and implement field data collection for projects.
• Support seasonal Flood Warning program and Flood Patrol operations as required.

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or equivalent, with intermediate experience in hydraulic modeling of natural systems.
• Working knowledge of open channel hydraulics, river mechanics, and floodplain management.
• Proficiency with HEC‑RAS (1‑D/2‑D) and ArcGIS Pro.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.

• Washington State driver's license.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Washington or Engineer‑in‑Training certification.
• Drone pilot’s license (Part 107).
• Experience handling politically sensitive issues.

• Hybrid work model – remote and in‑person as needed.
• Work location:
  
  Can work remote within Washington state; primary onsite location at King Street Center, Seattle.
• Work schedule:
  
  Full‑time, 40‑hour week, typical 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Monday‑Friday; may require early, late, weekend hours during flood events.
• Physical requirements:
  
  Walking, uneven terrain, personal protective equipment; participation in flood emergency response required.
