Systems Engineer - Traction Electrification

Overview

Technical role as an engineer responsible for traction electrification systems including incoming AC utility feeds and medium voltage AC power distribution, DC traction power substations, overhead contact systems (OCS), and related automated monitoring and control systems.

Seattle, WA area. Primary location: 401 S Jackson St, Seattle, WA 98104, USA. Hybrid schedule may apply.

• Develops and maintains agency design criteria and standards for systems and assets in the assigned engineering discipline.
• Reviews and provides input to formal contract deliverables and submittals to ensure compliance with agency technical criteria, policies, and procedures for design development, systems interface coordination and integration, construction, testing and commissioning.
• Reviews and makes recommendations on changes and deviations from established agency standards and criteria.
• Supports senior staff working with city code and fire department officials to ensure code requirements and best practices are incorporated into design projects.
• Develops designs for follow-on and service delivery projects from start to finish, coordinating schedule, scope, and budget.
• Provides engineering economic analysis for total cost of ownership.
• Supports the department and others on matters as directed; may serve on committees; prepares and presents reports and participates in professional group meetings.
• Supports Sustainability efforts to develop efficient designs and evaluate new technologies to improve efficiency and reduce impact.
• Collaborates with staff across the organization to ensure continuous improvement and best practices in engineering criteria, policies, and procedures.
• Champions core values and demonstrates values-based behaviors; contributes to diversity, equity, and inclusion in alignment with policy.
• Adheres to safety rules and procedures and integrates sustainability into daily work practices.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field plus four years of mechanical systems engineering experience in design, construction or operations and maintenance of complex industrial mechanical systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Industrial power distribution systems and rail transit traction electrification.
• Operational characteristics of traction power and overhead contact systems engineering projects.
• Principles of electrical and traction power systems engineering, design, and construction.
• Ability to oversee and monitor integration and design of traction electrification within a transit system.
• Federal, state, and local codes, OSHA requirements, and related regulations.
• Effective business writing and basic report preparation.
• Troubleshooting, diagnostics, and root cause analysis.
• Time management and ability to manage a large workload.
• Collaboration and ability to build effective working relationships with stakeholders.
• Clear verbal and written communication of technical information.
• Meeting management and ability to plan and conduct effective meetings.
• Systems thinking to understand interdependencies and decompose complex problems.

• Work is performed in a hybrid office, field, and shop environment.
• Field work may involve exposure to dangerous machinery, extreme weather, chemicals, and noise.
• Position typically requires three days per week in the office.
• Field inspections and standing/walking may be required; 24-hour on-call program and potential weekend/night shifts.
• The agency provides safety training and equipment as required.
