Join Blue Origin's Engines Business Unit
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.
As part of a hardworking team of engineers, you will design, analyze, and optimize complex engine components, assemblies and systems. You will work with cross-functional teams to develop innovative solutions for challenging thermal problems across various applications. A successful candidate will apply their knowledge to analyze and investigate steady state and transient thermal responses of the engine to provide integrated engineering team with requirements to efficiently operate and maintain engine across the operating envelope required by customers.
You will be responsible for thermal design and analysis of components, assemblies and systems to support fabrication, testing, production and operational life cycle.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead thermal design and analysis of rotating and static components/assemblies from concept through fabrication, testing, validation and into service.
- Complete thermal design optimization studies to define engine and component cooling requirements, including sizing of lubrication and cooling flows.
- Complete hand calculations and finite element analysis (FEA) of rotating and static components and assemblies to evaluate hardware thermal state and engine heat rejection.
- Collaborate with team members from various fields and backgrounds to perform trade studies which consider operating environment and duty cycle, to optimize design performance and durability.
- Document thermal analysis to support release of engineering drawings and documents
- Improve enterprise analysis capabilities by creating process automation tools for model creation, thermal balance checks, and analysis report generation
- Support test plan development to verify requirements and generate material and data necessary to establish confidence in design solutions
Minimum Qualifications
- B.S. degree in engineering discipline and 5+ years of experience
- Demonstrated proficiency with one or more of the following analysis codes, (ANSYS Workbench or Thermal Desktop)
- Experience with flow network modeling software (Flownex, Sinda/Fluint)
- Knowledgeable in determining appropriate scope of thermal modeling (Lumped capacitance, 1-D thermal network, 2-D and 3-D simulations)
- Solid understanding of heat transfer, flow, and thermodynamic first principles
- Knowledge of engineering materials and their applications to achieve optimal thermal design outcomes
- Demonstrated experience using scripting languages (VBA, Matlab, Python, FORTRAN, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications
- MS or PhD in engineering discipline with focus on thermal of fluid sciences
- Professional and/or academic experience focused on thermal and fluid sciences
- Experience in rotating machinery design and analysis (turbo machinery, compressors, fans)
- Familiar with sizing cooling and lubrications systems for systems requiring continuous heat rejection
- Working knowledge of high-temperature material properties and selection
- Prior job experience in thermal/fluid testing and instrumentation definition
- Experience with Agentic AI
