Overview

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join its data center design team in one of our four hubs:
Austin, TX;
Columbus, OH;
Herndon, VA; or Seattle, WA.

As a Geotechnical Engineer at AWS you will provide technical guidance and oversight on geotechnical issues related to construction projects. You will be part of a design team tasked with solving problems and advancing geotechnical design for prototypical Data Center sites, including vendor oversight and documentation throughout all project phases.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that enable customer access to our services. You will collaborate with software, hardware, network engineers, supply chain, security, and operations teams to uphold safety, security, and cost-effective delivery.

Key responsibilities
  • Analyze data from geotechnical investigations to identify hazards that may affect design, construction, or operation.
  • Provide technical guidance to project managers, contractors, and stakeholders on foundation design, slope stability, earthworks, pavement design, and groundwater control.
  • Manage external geotechnical design consultants through the data center design and construction process.
  • Review and optimize designs for site layout, earthworks, foundations, soil stabilization and amendments, pavements, etc.
  • Coordinate with internal and external design engineers.
  • Effectively communicate design standards to internal and external project partners.
  • Document and communicate conceptual designs and maintain project documentation before, during, and after construction.
  • Develop and maintain design standards, prototypes, and template specifications related to geotechnical engineering for data centers and supporting infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with AWS Due Diligence and Real Estate teams to determine site selection criteria and review Due Diligence reports.
  • Prepare, review, and release design RFPs for projects including data centers and special program facilities.
  • Manage multiple fast-paced projects and align with Technical Program Manager expectations on cost and schedule variables.
  • Lead initiatives to improve cost, quality, schedule, and consistency.
  • Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction reviews, and coordination with authorities having jurisdiction.

Basic Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer License
  • 4+ years of geotechnical engineering experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with building codes and regional regulations
  • Experience carrying design concepts from exploration to deployment or mass production
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents
  • Proficiency in geotechnical engineering standards to review investigations and assessments for soil/rock conditions, site suitability, and hazards
  • 2+ years of design experience for Data Centers or Mission Critical facilities with knowledge of land development practices
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and MS Office Suite

Compensation:
The base salary range is provided with the total package including sign-on bonuses and RSUs. Final compensation is based on experience, qualifications, and location.
