Summary
The Reality Labs (RL) team at Meta is helping more people around the world come together and connect through hardware and software. As part of the Reality Labs Devices team, we are builders who break down barriers to what is possible. Together, we design and build manufacturing processes that transform technology into products. The Subject Matter Expert (SME) team is responsible for evaluating technologies and identifying supply chain solutions that allow Meta to deliver products to market are seeking an SME engineer who can work independently to drive manufacturing solutions from concept through production.
Specific hardware development and operations knowledge is required. In this role, you will work with the engineering design and operations teams on critical parts of optical and mechanical component process development and manufacturing will collaborate across multiple projects with optical and mechanical product designers to enable novel smart glasses and AR/VR experiences. You will serve as the interface between the Tech Ops Engineering, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing teams to implement comprehensive process and technical solutions for our products.

Drive manufacturing process innovation in optical and mechanical component solutions for Smart Glass, and AR/VR productsWork with Hardware Engineering, Sourcing, Quality and Tech Ops Team to identify, audit and select the best suppliers’ partner (SPOR) to manufacture our productsResponsible for CMF processes (PVD, CVD, sputtering, printing, coating, painting), cover window manufacturing, film/lens lamination, die cut, laser cutting, adhesion (i.e., Optical Crystal Adhesion), cover window coating process development (i.e., AR coating, IR ink development, optical coating)Process DFM, process bring-up, and qualificationDevelop MP-intent equipment, processes, and materialsSet CTQ criteria to validate key processesRun statistical analysis from data collected through trials and investigationsWork with the internal Quality Team to define quality characterization, inspection methodology, and qualification of components before components ship to downstream vendorsWork with the Hardware Engineering, Quality, and Reliability teams to debug optical/ mechanical issues related to component development from New Product Introduction (NPI) to ramp. Identify root cause and provide improvements via process optimization and qualificationsTravel to vendor sites to validate and support development (up to 30%)Minimum Qualifications
BS degree or higher in Materials, Mechanical, Chemistry, Physics or equivalent experience5+ years of technical hands-on experience with mechanical, display, camera or optical manufacturingExperience partnering with multiple cross functional partnersExperience with consumer electronics manufacturing and/or highly cosmetic partsExperience with statistical analysis methods applied to manufacturing dataExperience with quality engineering tasks such as defect characterization, yield summary reporting, and driving yield improvement activitiesPreferred Qualifications
Experience integrating AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)Experience managing multiple suppliers across and/or multiple projects10+ years of coating process development experienceExperience with multiple surface finishing and coating methods. Spray and dip coating, PVD, CVD, Plating, Anodizing, Electro Deposition, etcExperience working with different materials, plastics, metals, glassExperience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)Experience with FA and troubleshooting cosmetic and functional coating defectsExperience developing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologiesPublic Compensation
