Avalara Project Manager

Our client is seeking a Temporary Avalara Project Manager to support a short-term tax compliance initiative. This role is ideal for a finance professional with hands‑on Avalara experience who can step in quickly, document and standardize processes, and help enable the internal team to operate confidently and independently once the project concludes.

The Project Manager will serve as the subject matter expert for Avalara, partnering closely with finance and accounting stakeholders to improve tax compliance workflows, support audits, and ensure accurate state registrations and reporting.

• Lead and manage an Avalara-focused tax compliance project from initiation through completion
• Document current and future‑state tax compliance processes and workflows
• Train internal finance and accounting team members on Avalara functionality and related processes
• Own audit support activities related to sales and use tax compliance
• Perform and oversee reconciliations tied to tax filings and reporting
• Support and standardize state registration and ongoing compliance efforts
• Identify gaps, risks, and opportunities for process improvement related to tax compliance
• Serve as the primary point of contact for Avalara-related questions during the project

• 3+ years of experience in finance, accounting, or tax-related roles
• Hands‑on experience using Avalara for tax compliance
• Strong understanding of sales and use tax compliance and state-level requirements
• Experience with audit support and tax reconciliations
• Ability to clearly document processes and create training materials
• Strong project management and organizational skills
• Excellent communication skills and ability to train non-experts

• Prior experience leading or supporting tax system implementations or optimization projects
• Experience working in a consulting or project-based environment
• Familiarity with multi-state tax compliance

• Clear, well-documented tax compliance processes
• An internal team that is confident using Avalara independently
• Improved consistency and standardization across state registrations and filings
• Successful completion of the project within the defined timeframe
