Under the direction and supervision of the Supervisor of TEC Examiners, the employee in this position reviews tax returns for accuracy and completeness and codes those same returns for data processing. He/she is required to correspond with taxpayers to obtain missing vital information, using established procedures and guidelines.
Work is reviewed for conformity to standards and for the efficient performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
DUTIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)- Examines 1040ez, 1040a, 1040s, 8689s, non‑remittance and remittance returns. Codes and edits corporate and fiduciaries non‑remittance and remittance returns
- Performs quality reviews for completeness, legal, procedural and mathematical accuracy, and uniform application of the law.
- Conducts error resolution. Compiles and prepares reports.
- Researches manually for extensions and estimated tax payments for income, corporate and fiduciary returns not posted to the system.
- Contacts taxpayers to request additional information to code and edit returns.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
An Associates degree in accounting or business administration and two (2) years experience performing tax related or accounting work.
OR
High School Diploma or its equivalent with nine (9) or more credits in business administration or accounting and four (4) years experience reviewing and editing data or tax related documents.
FACTOR 1 - KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION- Some knowledge of current Virgin Islands and Federal Tax laws, rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of methods and techniques of coding, editing and familiarity with the files, procedural manuals and other related materials utilized in the research and analysis of tax returns and supporting documentation.
- Ability to prepare and maintain statistical and informational records and reports.
The incumbent receives general supervision from the Supervisor of TEC Examiner. The incumbent is expected to perform with a considerable degree of independence and exercise a high degree of initiative and creativity.
FACTOR 3 - GUIDELINESThe guidelines used by the TEC Examiners include the Internal Revenue Code, Federal Tax regulations, and other local tax regulations. The guidelines consist of pre-determined on-the-job procedures and manuals. Judgment must be used in interpreting and applying guidelines. Guidelines are applicable in every situation. Ingenuity, resourcefulness, good judgment and strong leadership are required to resolve some of the issues that will arise.
FACTOR4 - COMPLEXITY
The job requires the ability to manage multiple priorities and the ability to perform tasks rapidly and accurately. This position requires the ability to supervise junior level staff and maintain good working relations with all employees in the section.
FACTOR 5 - SCOPE AND EFFECTThe scope of the work affects the coding and editing returns.
FACTOR 6 - PERSONAL CONTACTSContacts are made with TEC Examiners. Contacts are also made with Taxpayer Assistance staff to answer queries regarding returns.
FACTOR 7 - PURPOSE OF CONTACTSTo obtain or supply information with regard to coding and editing returns.
FACTOR 8 - PHYSICAL DEMANDSThere are no physical demands. The job is primarily sedentary in nature.
FACTOR 9 - WORK ENVIRONMENTThe work environment is within an office setting. There are no risks or discomforts associated with this position.
