This role offers an exciting chance to work with the Solid Waste Division’s government relations and policy leads to support information sharing among our government partners, and staff two important Advisory Committees that help advance the work of the division and grow your skillset.

About this Role:

This new role within the DNRP Solid Waste Division (SWD) will support the Government Relations team through staffing two key city and industry advisory committees, the Metropolitan Solid Waste Advisory Committee (MSWAC) and Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC). This person will also play a key role in advancing the division’s policies and priorities in collaboration with internal and external partners. This role involves a high level of collaboration, planning, and managing complex and sometimes ambiguous processes with diverse perspectives to achieve SWD’s objectives.

About the Team:

The Government Relations and Community Engagement team is a high-performing team that includes government relations and communications, touching every corner of King County’s Solid Waste Division and leading internal and external government relations efforts to achieve our goal of zero-waste of resources through our Re+ program, capital projects, and outreach.

This talented team works with elected officials at every level of government, provides transparency through efficient and effective public records response, and communicates strategically with internal and external audiences.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Serve as the liaison and provide staff support to the Metropolitan Solid Waste Advisory Committee (MSWAC) and King County Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC).
  • Assist Government Relations with relationship management, through communications with key city and advisory committee members and partners.
  • Monitor Sound Cities Association and Interlocal Agreement partners’ activities for solid waste-related work.
  • Assist with the project management of county legislative packages.
  • Monitor and track policy and key government relations activities throughout the Solid Waste Division.
Qualifications You Bring
  • Experience working with or knowledge of state, federal, or local legislative processes, committees, and oversight of committee/legislation management.
  • Knowledge of general government principles and procedures
  • Demonstrated experience in synthesizing information and making recommendations within and outside of established policies and procedures.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to effectively manage ambiguity, learn on the fly, and make quality decisions
  • Demonstrated success working with municipal or state government entities, community organizations, or private sector businesses to develop and implement projects and strategies
  • Politically savvy, including sensitivity to how people and organizations work
  • Skills in managing multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Knowledge of local government processes and procedures is preferred
