Lateral Hiring Incentives

  • Deputies hired as a KCSO deputy on 09/11/25 or later are eligible to receive 40 hours of vacation and 40 hours of sick time credited on the first day of employment.
  • Laterals hired as a KCSO deputy on 09/11/25 or later may be eligible for a signing bonus of $40,000.
  • Candidates may receive $25,000 in total; $10,000 on the first paycheck and $15,000 after passing probation, with a three‑year commitment.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol a designated area of the county, assisting persons in trouble and rendering other public safety services as needed.
  • Respond to calls of service, secure the scene, interview victims and witnesses, gather evidence, complete incident and arrest reports, and investigate suspected persons.
  • Investigate family disputes, reports of child maltreatment, and complaints about persons with social or behavioral problems; take action including custody or referrals to appropriate agencies.
  • Complete administrative tasks such as report writing with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Testify in court, presenting facts and observations accurately and objectively.
  • Participate in community policing activities and serve as a resource to the community.
  • Perform related work as required, including assignments in administrative, investigative, and special operations units.
  • Work schedule:

    24/7 position with shifts (day, swing, or graveyard) determined by need and assigned location; patrol assignments typically employ a rotating schedule of ten‑hour shifts on a “four days on, three days off, four days on, four days off” basis.
  • This position is an open and continuous recruitment.
Requirements for All Lateral Applicants
  • Experience as a full‑time commissioned police officer with at least 12 months of active patrol after completion of all academy training (PTO/FTO or similar counts toward the 12 months).
  • Successful completion of probation as a commissioned officer with a city, county or state police or sheriff’s department.
  • Federal law enforcement experience may qualify, pending a review from the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center (CJTC).
  • No break in service longer than two years from a former police officer position.
  • Academy training meeting or exceeding 720 hours of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center's standards.
  • Out‑of‑state applicants must complete an 80‑hour equivalency academy.
  • Verification that the applicant does not meet any of the Sheriff’s Office Automatic Disqualifying Behaviors.
Application and Testing Process
  • Direct apply – Complete the online application; avoid using phrases such as “see resume.” Review the Sheriff's Office Automatic Disqualifiers and answer all supplemental questions.
  • Application Review – Applications are screened weekly for accuracy and completeness. Qualified candidates will be contacted within 5 to 7 business days.
  • Oral Board Exam – Qualified candidates self‑schedule an oral board examination. The panel evaluates communication skills, background, community service experience, integrity, motivation, interpersonal skills and problem‑solving ability.
  • Civil Service Eligibility List – Successful oral board candidates advance to the background investigation phase. The final score is based on the oral board interview and any approved preference points. Ranking determines the order of background investigations.
  • Background Investigation – Upon successful completion of the oral board, candidates receive a background packet to be completed within two weeks. The investigation typically takes six weeks for qualified lateral candidates.
  • Preference Points
    • Veteran's Preference – Provide a valid DD214 at the time of oral board appointment.
