Job Summary
UW Police Department (UWPD) is offering a $5,000 sign‑on bonus for eligible Lateral‑Level Police Officers joining our Seattle campus. The department serves a diverse student and community population, providing public safety and law‑enforcement services 24/7. Key Responsibilities- Patrol a designated area on foot or by patrol car to enforce institution rules, state and city statutes, and federal laws.
- Inspect buildings and grounds for trespassers, fire, property damage, or other irregularities.
- Direct and regulate traffic; investigate accidents or crimes; administer first aid; issue citations; gather evidence; locate witnesses; appear in court to present evidence and testify.
- Operate department communication equipment, answer telephone inquiries, receive reports, dispatch units, operate paging system, monitor alarm systems, and prepare/distribute reports.
- Deterrence or disperse illegal gatherings and respond to campus demonstrations to safeguard free speech and protect people and property.
- Maintain surveillance of areas for criminal activity; issue misdemeanor citations; investigate, arrest and book suspects; assist city or county police and state patrol in emergencies.

Police officers work a variety of shifts based on assignment, ranging from traditional 5×8 or 4×10 schedules to irregular weekend work. Flexible scheduling and willingness to work day, swing and night shifts is required.
Requirements- High school graduation or equivalent.
- At least 21 years of age upon completion of the Police Academy.
- Valid driver’s license.
- No previous felony convictions.
- U.S. Citizenship may be required.
- Lateral candidates: minimum two years of full‑time, paid commissioned officer experience with no more than a 24‑month break in service.
- Federal law‑enforcement officers, corrections officers, military police, game wardens, or other outside‑department officers do not qualify for Lateral positions.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Fluency in other languages (e.g., Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Russian).
Police officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The role requires flexibility, willingness to work various shifts, and availability for overtime as needed.
