Labor Standards Engagement Specialist
The City of Seattle is a national leader in advancing fair wage, labor, and workforce practices that promote equity and economic well-being. The Office of Labor Standards (OLS) enforces labor laws through strategic enforcement, policy development, and community engagement, with a commitment to race and social justice. The Office of Labor Standards has an opportunity for a Labor Standards Engagement Specialist to join its highly skilled, dynamic Outreach Division.
This position will report to the Outreach Director.
The responsibilities include:
- Outreach. Conducting and planning outreach to workers and businesses/hiring entities. Researching, planning, developing and leading multi-faceted outreach and education programs to empower workers with knowledge of their rights and equip employers, businesses, and hiring entities and other organizations with the tools to comply with labor standards laws advancing fair and equitable workplaces. Utilizing a variety of established and innovative means such as targeted campaigns;
special events; creation of outreach materials and trainings; use of online platforms; technical assistance; and extensive engagement with diverse communities, as assigned. - Project & Contract Management. Providing project management and all aspects of contract management for community partnerships, as assigned. This responsibility also includes creating periodic reporting on community partner activities, presenting to the public and other interested parties on community partnerships, their activities, outcomes, strategies, etc.
- Planning, developing, and leading awareness campaigns and training. Drafting informational materials and provide expert-level assistance on ordinance requirements to stakeholder groups and the general public. Using printed information, graphic design and on-line platforms to communicate complex information in a simple, compelling manner for a variety of learners, including non-English speakers and limited English proficiency speakers.
- Community, stakeholder and team collaboration. Engaging with a wide variety of individuals, community organizations, and business associations to develop trusting relationships and valuable partnerships. Gather stakeholder feedback for policy projects. Collaborate with the enforcement team.
- Labor standards ambassador. Developing strong working knowledge of labor standards. Be highly attuned to issues that affect the workplace and policies that can mitigate or eliminate negative impacts on the most vulnerable communities, including people of color and immigrants and refugees.
- Language Access. Coordinating translation of materials and interpretation at live events.
- Strategic enforcement campaigns. Supporting the office's efforts to develop innovative approaches to enforcement and outreach that involve cross team collaborations and community partnerships.
- Boards & Commissions. Ensuring OLS's outreach strategy and efforts are communicated to OLS's Boards and Commissions and to receive, assess, and incorporate (as feasible) recommendations from the Board(s) or Commission(s), as assigned. In that effort, the staff member provides direct support to their respective Outreach Subcommittee with tasks, including meetings, recording and maintaining minutes or other records, and ensuring compliance with City policy and legal requirements (e.g. OPMA, Public Records Act, Record Retention, etc.).
- Race and Social Justice. Applying race and social justice lens to all work and engage in office efforts to eliminate racial disparities and achieve racial equity in City government and in the broader community.
You will be most successful in this role with a combination of the following:
- Skills:
Project management and managing multiple deliverables simultaneously, contract administration/management, communicating effectively through writing and public speaking, consistently and intentionally applying racial equity and social justice principles, analyzing and synthesizing outreach data and information, interpersonal communication, learning and communicating technical information; MS Outlook, Office, and Excel. - Experience in:
Planning, developing, and leading programs, especially programs that include outreach, education, public awareness campaigns, and contract and budget management, communicating technical information to diverse stakeholders through a variety of methods, collaborating with communities of color, workers, employers, advocacy organizations, community groups, and/or business associations. - The ability to:
Respect people's lived experience and reflect a deep understanding of race, social justice, and equity in your interactions and work, quickly understand and comfortably navigate policies and legal requirements, communicate to diverse audiences effectively through public speaking, group settings, one-on-one, and in writing, interact with people with a high level of empathy and emotional intelligence for the…
