Overview
Ophthalmic Technician – (2500033F). The Ophthalmic Technician performs visual fields, visual acuity testing, orthoptic motor and sensory evaluations, objective and subjective refraction and other technical evaluations (e.g. ophthalmic ultrasonography, ERG, OCT) as requested. Assists physicians in performing special procedures, difficult examination techniques. Maintains inventory of examination lenses, instruments, fixation targets, eye drops, etc. Works closely with the full-time staff, fellows, residents and other orthoptists.
Assists with orientation and instruction of residents, fellows in performing orthoptic examinations and with prospective and retrospective clinical studies.
Position includes providing services at DC, Prince George's County and Montgomery County sites.
QualificationsMinimum Education
High School Diploma or GED or equivalent with one year of ophthalmic technician or technologist training. (Required)
Minimum Work Experience
1 year pediatric ophthalmology clinic training or work experience (Preferred)
Required Skills/Knowledge
Clinical experience and academic interest. Retinoscopy, Goldmann and Humphrey perimetry competence are required. Good communication skills with patients, parents, coworkers and physicians are essential.
Required Licenses and Certifications
Eligibility for certification by JCAPO.
Clinical Duties
- Perform visual fields and visual acuity testing as requested.
- Perform orthoptic sensory evaluations and administer orthoptic eye exercises as recommended.
- Perform objective and subjective refraction and other technical evaluations (e.g. Ophthalmic Photography, ERG when applicable).
Training
- Assist with orientation and instruction of residents and fellows in performing orthoptic examinations.
Physician Assistance
- Assist physicians in performing special procedures and difficult examination techniques.
