The Pathology Laboratory is responsible for all tissue and bone marrow specimens collected at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. Pathology processes all specimens related to leukemia and lymphoma as well as all bone marrow specimens collected at UWMC, NHW and the Fred Hutch for transplant and hematology/oncology patients. Other samples processed include surgical pathology samples collected due to complications of blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) such as graft-vs.
-host disease, infectious complications, hematologic malignancies, as well as toxicities arising from the transplant program.
Tissue and fluid samples collected for morphologic evaluation of other diseases will be forwarded to clinical laboratories within the University of Washington system. The laboratory is staffed six days a week and has on-call Technologists and Pathologists available twenty-four hours a day to run and result critical specimens. The Fred Hutch Pathology Laboratory provides routine histologic staining, as well as immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization staining.
In addition, Pathology provides histology services for a number of collaborative research studies with other members of the Fred Hutchinson Clinical Research Division, as well as for intradepartmental research based on the pathology archival material.
The Pathology Lab Supervisor is responsible for daily operations of the histology laboratory and the laboratory quality monitoring program. The supervisor is also responsible for all aspects for staff management including hiring/firing, annual performance appraisals, merit review, competency assessments and handling disciplinary action when appropriate.

Responsibilities- Performs the duties of a Clinical Histotechnician III
- Assure the quality, completeness and maintenance of the laboratory s procedure, policy, and safety manuals.
- Supervise the daily operations, including scheduling, sample receipt, routine and special testing, quality control, quality assurance, inventory, projects, and establishing priorities.
- Work with the Laboratory Director and Manager on strategic goals and long-term planning.
- Evaluate and document new techniques and procedures; and assist in the selection of new laboratory instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Implement safety rules and regulations in compliance with institution, state and federal standards.
- Plan, schedule and/or coordinate continuing education and in-service education programs for technicians.
- Act as liaison for the laboratory with other health care and administrative personnel.
- Assist in development of laboratory budget and monitor expenditures of funds.
