The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) role embodies our medical mission to be a trusted partner for internal stakeholders and the healthcare community. The MSL drives scientific exchange to enhance medical education, data generation, insight, and patients’ access to medicine. The MSL is responsible for identifying disease and product‑related medical needs in a defined geography and for developing and maintaining relationships with thought leaders (TL) and healthcare providers (HCP) within that region.
The role ensures patients have access to BMS medicines and supports safe and appropriate use through peer‑to‑peer discussions aligned with medical strategies and external stakeholder needs, facilitating research and serving as the medical resource for the community.
- Develop and maintain relationships with academic and community research thought leaders, appropriate HCPs, and access stakeholders to address scientific, unsolicited product, and HEOR questions.
- Engage through 1:1, group presentations, remote, and other channels.
- Use scientific resources and presentations effectively.
- Present information to TL/HCPs and respond to questions, ensuring medical accuracy and compliance with local procedures, ethical and legal guidelines.
- Assess the medical landscape by meeting with TL/HCPs/Access stakeholders to understand needs and expertise.
- Continuously update knowledge of treatment strategies, products, unmet needs, clinical trials, and HEOR.
- Understand the competitive landscape and evolving healthcare models.
- Identify opportunities to partner with HCPs on disease state initiatives, research projects, and investigator‑sponsored research aligned with BMS objectives.
- Attend medical congresses and local/regional meetings.
- Provide meaningful medical insights to internal medical and commercial teams to inform strategy and business decisions.
- Develop geography‑specific Field Medical and TL interaction plans based on therapeutic objectives.
- Adopt an institution/account planning approach and contribute to cross‑functional plans.
- Support the delivery of scientifically meaningful programs and projects aligned with the local Medical and Field Medical plan.
- Establish a compliant collaboration with cross‑matrix field teams.
- Provide internal training and scientific updates to stakeholders such as Commercial, Regulatory, Pharmacovigilance, Legal, HEOR, Value Access & Payment.
- Provide scientific support at promotional meetings, including speaker evaluation and support for BMS‑contracted speakers.
- Participate in assigned congress activities.
- Support interventional and non‑interventional research studies, including site identification and patient recruitment.
- Provide recommendations on study and site feasibility to the clinical development team.
- Support HCPs in ISR submission and execution.
- Ensure investigators understand BMS pharmacovigilance procedures and report adverse events.
- Actively support CRO‑sponsored studies as directed.
- MD, PharmD, PhD, APP, PA, NP with relevant pharmaceutical experience or a broad medical background.
- Knowledge of disease area, scientific publications, competitive landscape, and treatment trends.
- Understanding of clinical trial design and process.
- Knowledge of the national healthcare and access environment.
- Knowledge of HEOR core concepts.
- Excellent English language skills, spoken and written.
- Minimum of 2 years in a clinical and/or pharmaceutical environment.
- Prior MSL experience.
- Ability to work independently and as a team player.
- Skill translating scientific data into actionable insights for clinicians.
- Strong communication and presentation skills for research and healthcare professionals.
- Skill developing peer‑to‑peer relationships with TLs, scientists, and other professionals.
- Rapid learning of new subject areas and environments.
