Overview
Summary At Apple, we build systems that power services used by hundreds of millions of people around the world, and every second counts. The Services Engineering organization is at the heart of this mission, ensuring our platforms are performant, secure, and always available. We are seeking a technically strong Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to join our growing Seattle team, focused on traffic management, load balancing, and secure networking infrastructure.
You’ll play a key role in shaping how services communicate securely and efficiently across Apple’s global ecosystem. Our team owns a foundational platform that service teams across Apple depend on for high availability, performance, and security, including intelligent routing and secure TLS termination.
As a Reliability Engineer, you’ll work closely with engineering teams in North America and Europe, contributing to a globally distributed system that operates 24x7 at immense scale. You’ll design, automate, and operate core networking services that underpin Apple’s products. This is an IC role with strong technical leadership potential.
Responsibilities- Design, build, and operate highly available infrastructure systems for traffic routing, load balancing, and secure connectivity at global scale.
- Collaborate with development teams to influence architecture, improve observability, and embed SRE best practices across the SDLC.
- Respond to incidents when needed (on-call rotation), but focus on preventing them through proactive engineering, monitoring, and system improvements.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and drive innovation for secure, high-performance networking.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement: write clear documentation, conduct blameless postmortems, and define SLOs aligned with business impact.
- Mentor teammates and share knowledge across a growing international SRE community.
- 3+ years of experience in traffic management, networking infrastructure, or distributed systems.
- 3+ years of software engineering or reliability engineering experience.
- Bachelor of Science in relevant engineering disciplines.
- Proficient in at least one modern programming or scripting language (e.g., Go, Rust, Python, Java, Bash) with a track record of shipping production-grade tooling or services.
- Understanding of load balancing, TLS, and secure network communications in large-scale environments.
- Ability to act decisively in dynamic situations and align with teams when designing long-term solutions.
- Automation focused: experience with deployments, alert triage, certificate rotation, or self-service workflows.
- Strong communication across time zones and disciplines.
- Commitment to operational excellence and reliability, performance, and security.
- Experience with cloud-native proxies or service mesh technologies.
- Hands-on experience with Dev Ops culture, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Proven success delivering robust, diagnosable systems in 24x7 customer-facing environments.
- Continuous learner with willingness to share diverse perspectives in technical discussions.
