Network Development Engineer II

About the Role

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. The Network Development Engineer is responsible for building, deploying, and scaling Amazon networks across multiple global datacenters, collaborating with network and systems teams to deliver high performance, efficient, and reliable services.

• Perform high‑quality network and systems operations, deployments, scaling, technology refresh, sustaining engineering, best‑practice application, optimization, internal and external customer interactions, and produce appropriate technical documentation.
• Create and implement changes on the network.
• Work closely with automation teams to define tools that enable higher‑volume scaling.
• Lead network projects in sustaining engineering, deployment/implementation, scaling, technology refresh, best‑practice application, or optimization.
• Sustain AWS’s next‑generation networks for key customers by diagnosing, mitigating, and resolving large‑scale networking events.
• Operate and troubleshoot network routing, interconnectivity, platform performance, and configuration issues, including low‑level application interaction, Unix systems, and modern networking software tools.
• Drive and support innovation from rack to border and everything in between.
• Partner with the broader Network/Infrastructure organization on engineering, configuration standards, and tooling.
• Collaborate with Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure rapid roll‑out of new designs and products, and to support deployment and sustainment of networking software tools.
• Maintain standards across the networking toolset and ensure compliance with policies.
• Deliver simple, sustainable, and repeatable solutions and processes.
• Collaborate with escalation engineers and resolvers at the highest tier.
• Create and review documentation and processes regarding network implementation, deployments, recurring issues, SOPs, and knowledge transfer material.

• Work on a 24x7 on‑call rotation, with the ability to drive to the workplace for critical events.
• Manage customers during problem resolution and operate efficiently under pressure.
• Maintain a high level of alertness during scheduled work hours.
• Travel to data center, network sites, and Amazon/customer offices as needed.

• 4+ years of major internet routing protocols experience.
• 4+ years of experience working in a Linux/Unix environment.
• 1+ year of automation scripting using Python, Bash, Shell, and/or Perl.

• Experience with systems administration, programming, or networking.
• Thorough understanding of TCP/IP networking, IP routing, server load balancing, network security architecture, and core technologies such as IP, TCP, OSPF/IS‑IS, BGP, MPLS, load balancers, firewalls, ACLs, DNS, DHCP, IPAM, LDAP, NFS, etc.

Base salary range:
– VA, Herndon:  –  USD annually
– WA, Seattle:  –  USD annually
