Overview
Do you like to use network and Unix systems engineering to deliver simple, sustainable and repeatable solutions? Would you like to play a key role in driving the stability and sustainability of next‑generation IP networks? In this role, you will join the AWS GCNA (Global Connectivity and Network Availability) Organization as a Network Development Engineer in the Backbone Enterprise and Regional Engineering (BERE) team.
Keyresponsibilities
- Create and implement changes on the network.
- Work closely with automation teams in defining tools that allow us to scale at higher volume.
- Lead network projects in areas such as network sustaining engineering, deployment/implementation, scaling, technology refresh, best‑practice application, and/or optimization.
- Sustain AWS’s next‑generation networks for significant customers by diagnosing, mitigating impact, and resolving large‑scale networking events.
- Operate and troubleshoot network routing, interconnectivity, platforms, performance, and configuration issues, including low‑level application interaction, Unix systems, and new‑age networking software tools.
- Drive and support innovation from Top of Rack to the Network Border and everything in between.
- Partner with the broader Network/Infrastructure organization on engineering, configuration standards, and tools.
- Work with Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure fast, smooth rollout of new designs and products, and assist with deployment and sustaining of networking software tools.
- Maintain standards across the networking toolset and ensure compliance with policies.
- Deliver simple, sustainable and repeatable solutions and processes.
- Collaborate with highest tier escalation engineers and resolvers.
- Work in a 24x7 on‑call rotation, with the ability to drive into the workplace for critical events.
- Manage customers during problem resolution and operate efficiently under pressure.
- Sit at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail.
- Travel to data center/network sites and customer offices as needed.
Within AWS Networking, the Backbone Enterprise and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization designs, implements, and operates a wide array of networking infrastructure that provides global connectivity between all AWS Regions and edge locations. BERE supports massive scale growth and the operation of our global corporate office and data center network.

Basic Qualifications- 4+ years of major internet routing protocols experience.
- 4+ years of experience working in a Linux/Unix environment.
- 4+ years of network engineering and deployments for large‑scale networks, including hands‑on physical infrastructure installations, hardware integration, racking, and cabling.
- 4+ years of technical support experience, or experience taking ownership and driving resolution on escalated customer issues.
- 1+ year of automation scripting using Python, Bash, Shell, and/or Perl.
- 4+ years of experience developing engineering, deployment, or operations mechanisms to support IP network and/or networking systems.
- Knowledge of network hardware and packet forwarding architectures.
- Thorough understanding of TCP/IP networking, IP routing, server load balancing, network security architecture, and core technologies such as IP, TCP, OSPF/IS‑IS, BGP, MPLS, load balancers, firewalls, ACLs, DNS, DHCP, IPAM, LDAP, NFS.
- Experience with one or more router, server load balancer, or firewall vendor platforms such as Cisco, Juniper, Alcatel-Lucent, Arista, Brocade, Extreme, Citrix, F5, Fortinet, Palo Alto.
- In‑depth knowledge of and experience with networking and/or systems technologies.
- Possess scripting skills or a desire to learn Python, Perl, or Shell (bash, ksh, csh).
