Network Development Engineer, BERE Fabric

Overview

Do you like to use network and Unix systems engineering to deliver simple, sustainable and repeatable solutions? Would you like to play a key role in driving the stability and sustainability of next‑generation IP networks? In this role, you will join the AWS GCNA (Global Connectivity and Network Availability) Organization as a Network Development Engineer in the Backbone Enterprise and Regional Engineering (BERE) team.

• Create and implement changes on the network.
• Work closely with automation teams in defining tools that allow us to scale at higher volume.
• Lead network projects in areas such as network sustaining engineering, deployment/implementation, scaling, technology refresh, best‑practice application, and/or optimization.
• Sustain AWS’s next‑generation networks for significant customers by diagnosing, mitigating impact, and resolving large‑scale networking events.
• Operate and troubleshoot network routing, interconnectivity, platforms, performance, and configuration issues, including low‑level application interaction, Unix systems, and new‑age networking software tools.
• Drive and support innovation from Top of Rack to the Network Border and everything in between.
• Partner with the broader Network/Infrastructure organization on engineering, configuration standards, and tools.
• Work with Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure fast, smooth rollout of new designs and products, and assist with deployment and sustaining of networking software tools.
• Maintain standards across the networking toolset and ensure compliance with policies.
• Deliver simple, sustainable and repeatable solutions and processes.
• Collaborate with highest tier escalation engineers and resolvers.

• Work in a 24x7 on‑call rotation, with the ability to drive into the workplace for critical events.
• Manage customers during problem resolution and operate efficiently under pressure.
• Sit at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail.
• Travel to data center/network sites and customer offices as needed.

• 4+ years of major internet routing protocols experience.
• 4+ years of experience working in a Linux/Unix environment.
• 4+ years of network engineering and deployments for large‑scale networks, including hands‑on physical infrastructure installations, hardware integration, racking, and cabling.
• 4+ years of technical support experience, or experience taking ownership and driving resolution on escalated customer issues.
• 1+ year of automation scripting using Python, Bash, Shell, and/or Perl.
• 4+ years of experience developing engineering, deployment, or operations mechanisms to support IP network and/or networking systems.

• Knowledge of network hardware and packet forwarding architectures.
• Thorough understanding of TCP/IP networking, IP routing, server load balancing, network security architecture, and core technologies such as IP, TCP, OSPF/IS‑IS, BGP, MPLS, load balancers, firewalls, ACLs, DNS, DHCP, IPAM, LDAP, NFS.
• Experience with one or more router, server load balancer, or firewall vendor platforms such as Cisco, Juniper, Alcatel-Lucent, Arista, Brocade, Extreme, Citrix, F5, Fortinet, Palo Alto.
• In‑depth knowledge of and experience with networking and/or systems technologies.
• Possess scripting skills or a desire to learn Python, Perl, or Shell (bash, ksh, csh).
