Position: IT System Administration-Journey - Learning Management System (LMS) Administrator

Learning Management System Administrator

The Learning Management System (LMS) Administrator is a full-time, classified position within Shoreline College's eLearning Resources Department and reports directly to the Director of eLearning Services. This position is the technical lead and system administrator responsible for deploying and maintaining a range of technologies to support teaching and learning including the college's learning management system (currently Canvas), integrated technologies such as lecture capture, web conferencing, and a suite of other learning-focused technology tools.

The Learning Management System Administrator works collaboratively with coworkers in the eLearning department, Technology Support Services, and others across campus to ensure stable learning systems and to enable innovative approaches to learning through technology. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Lead overall system management and related tasks, such as customization, configuration, installation, integration, maintenance, modification, operation, planning, and testing.
  • Conduct testing and piloting of new tools and updates to LMS and integrated technologies prior to installing and deploying into a live production environment. Test interfaces between the LMS and related applications or integrations with other systems in both pre-production and production environments.
  • Serve as the single point of technical support for issues requiring tier 2 intervention for the LMS and all related/integrated applications. Identify, research, troubleshoot and resolve issues, provide support solutions via email, phone, video call, or other technology to students, faculty and staff.
  • Ensure user role permission levels, and system practices are in place to ensure regulatory compliance with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act).
  • Manage and extend integrations which control user account creation/deletion, user rights, courses, enrollments, and other automated functions.
  • Responsible for awareness, assessment, editing, and testing custom HTML, CSS and JS code in LMS and maintaining/ troubleshooting issues with this coding as needed, particularly after the monthly LMS updates.
  • Collaborate with members of the eLearning department, faculty, and other college staff to develop and implement innovative solutions for technology-enabled teaching, student support, course design, and assessment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in educational technology, instructional design, computer science, adult education or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Two years' experience with system configuration and support of a major software system, preferably a learning management system
  • Education/ experience may substitute year for year

Knowledge Of:

  • Learning Management System Administrator role/tasks and able to ensure security of the systems
  • General digital accessibility knowledge as these impact Canvas and other eLearning-supported tools
  • HTML/CSS and Java script
  • Ability to successfully integrate LTI 1.3 tools into the LMS
  • Microsoft Office tools including Sharepoint, Outlook, Teams;
    Zoom and other internet applications
