Position Overview
The Fataluku Telephone Interpreter is responsible for handling calls on demand, rendering the meaning of conversations between Fataluku and English speakers. The role involves working across a broad range of industries served by Language Line Solutions, including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel & hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and 911. The interpreter must process information quickly and concisely, recognize sensitive cultural differences, maintain a professional and courteous demeanor, and use appropriate terminology while understanding common industry procedures and practices.
EssentialJob Functions
- Respond to interpreting sessions promptly and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
- Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
- Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
- Maintain a professional demeanor throughout all interpreting sessions.
- Remain calm during interpreting sessions, particularly when a primary speaker is incoherent, upset, or in an emergency situation such as a 911 call.
- Maintain punctuality, availability, and compliance with client instructions during work hours.
- Follow protocols to ensure client expectations are met while keeping the Limited English‑Speaking Person (LEP) private and without unauthorized interaction.
- Understand protocol and terminology for various industries (medical, insurance, finance, law) and demonstrate cultural sensitivity in a diverse environment.
- Fluency in Fataluku and English, with cultural competency in regional and accent differences.
- Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills for high accuracy.
- Ability to concentrate, remain neutral and objective, and remain detached from content while handling sensitive topics such as end‑of‑life discussions, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and matters concerning sexual orientation or gender expression.
- Education or work experience in language‑related fields (teaching, language assessment, translation, or interpretation) preferred.
- Adaptability to technology enhancements that improve service delivery.
- Minimum age 18 and legal authorization to work in the United States.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to read and write in the required languages (highly preferred).
- Dedicated personal device for business use; compatible with Windows, MacOS, or Chrome
OS. - Acceptable tablets (iPadOS or Android) and smartphones (iOS or Android).
- High‑speed Internet connection with download speed ≥5
Mbps, upload speed ≥3
Mbps, ping ≤300ms, and jitter ≤30ms. - Quiet space free from background noise or distraction.
- Ability to operate a keyboard and mouse and remain in a stationary position.
- Manual dexterity sufficient for typing or writing; ability to lift up to 26lbs.
- Operate keyboard and mouse consistently during the majority of the workday.
- Operate provided software and systems to perform all job functions.
- Accept exposure to moderate noise levels from computer equipment, audio devices, or telephone.
- Independent contractor position; not eligible for employee benefits.
- Pay: $1.25 – $1.40 per minute.
