Position Overview
The Koho Telephone Interpreter is responsible for handling calls on demand, rendering the meaning of conversations between Koho and English speakers. The role breaks communication barriers across industries served by Language Line Solutions, including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel & hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and 911. The interpreter processes information quickly and concisely, recognizes sensitive cultural differences, and maintains professionalism and courtesy at all times.
Interpreting sessions may involve simple or complex, technical or non‑technical subjects. This position does not involve written translation. The interpreter works remotely from a home‑office and must ensure a quiet, secure environment.
- Respond promptly to interpreting sessions and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
- Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
- Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
- Maintain a professional demeanor throughout each interpreting session.
- Remain calm during sessions when a primary speaker is incoherent or upset, especially in emergency situations such as 911 calls.
- Maintain punctuality and availability during work hours.
- Follow client instructions in compliance with protocol to meet client expectations with the Limited English‑speaking Person (LEP), avoiding interaction with the LEP without client permission.
- Understand protocols and terminology for various industries, including but not limited to medical, insurance, finance, and law.
- Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and diversity.
- Handle highly emotional or stressful calls, remaining on the call for extended periods if needed and managing high call volumes while delivering required company service standards.
- Fluency in Koho and English, with cultural competency skills.
- Ability to assess regional and accent differences for effective communication with the LEP.
- Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills for high accuracy.
- Ability to concentrate, remain detached, neutral, and objective during calls involving sensitive subjects such as end‑of‑life conversations, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and matters concerning sexual orientation or gender expression.
- Education or work experience in language‑related fields (teaching, language assessment, translation, or interpretation) preferred.
- Flexibility to adapt to technology enhancements that improve service delivery.
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without future visa sponsorship.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must not be currently employed by a client of Language Line Solutions or an affiliated business.
- Ability to read and write the requested languages; highly preferred.
- Acceptance of a post‑offer, pre‑employment background check, and/or drug screen based on location.
- Dedicated personal device for business purposes.
- Desktop or laptop with Windows, macOS, or Chrome
OS operating system. - Tablets (iPadOS or Android) and smartphones (iOS or Android) acceptable.
- Restrictions:
Kaspersky products and Huawei hardware are not allowed. - High‑speed Internet connection with download speeds ≥5
Mbps, upload speeds ≥3
Mbps, ping ≤300ms, and jitter ≤30ms. - Quiet space free from background noise or distraction.
- Operate a keyboard and mouse and remain in a stationary position in front of a computer for the majority of the workday.
- Operate company‑provided software and systems for all job functions.
- Sufficient manual dexterity to type or write.
- Ability to lift up to 26lbs.
- Exposure to moderate noise levels from computer, audio, and telephone equipment.
