OverviewThe Washington State Attorney General's Office's Labor & Industries Division, Seattle, has an opening for an attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General (AAG) representing the Department of Labor and Industries in litigation involving workers compensation, worker health and safety, and employment standards.
Responsibilities- Represent the Department of Labor and Industries in litigation before administrative tribunals, superior courts, and appellate courts in various program areas including workers compensation, worker health and safety, and employment standards.
- Engage in civil litigation tasks such as discovery, drafting motions and briefs, negotiating with other parties, and presenting oral arguments.
- Handle cases electronically, participate in all-remote or hybrid hearings and trials, and use electronic case management tools.
- Contribute positively to a team and interact effectively with interested groups and members of the public.
- Participate in a growth-oriented culture that encourages learning and feedback, including training and mentoring opportunities.
- An interest in primarily litigating worker health and safety cases on behalf of the Department of Labor and Industries; prior experience in worker health and safety is not required, but interest in handling such cases is essential.
- An interest in civil litigation, including discovery, motions and briefs, negotiation, and oral argument before various courts and tribunals.
- The ability to handle cases electronically and to participate in remote or hybrid settings.
- The ability to contribute positively to a team and interact successfully with interested groups and the public.
- The desire to participate in a growth-oriented culture that encourages learning and giving and receiving feedback.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
- The ability to travel to litigation events throughout the state when needed.

Prior litigation experience is not required, but for those with prior experience the division will adapt training and case assignment to the experience level of the successful candidate. Both new and experienced attorneys are encouraged to apply!
RequirementsApplicants must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA s Rule 6 Law Clerk Program; and be licensed to practice law in Washington state. Applicants who meet the other stated qualifications and are actively pursuing admission by motion will also be considered.
