California Humane Officer

Legal Impact for Chickens (LIC) is a 501(c)(3) litigation nonprofit and California society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCA). We use strategic litigation to protect chickens and other farmed animals.

Our Costco shareholder derivative suit put factory farm conditions in the national spotlight. We're a lean, mission-driven team where every person makes an impact.

Why this role matters

California laws protect farmed animals from cruelty, but enforcement is lacking. You'll be on the front lines, investigating abuse, educating the public, and building cases that create real accountability.

What You'll Do

As a California Level 2 Humane Officer, you'll be LIC's eyes and ears in the field, investigating animal abuse and working to improve conditions for farmed animals across the state.

Core Responsibilities
  • Investigating violations of California animal cruelty laws, responding to citizen reports, and working alongside fellow law enforcement agencies.
  • Building cases through evidence collection, photography, witness interviews, and report writing.
  • Collaborating with LIC attorneys to prepare cases for court.
  • Testifying in court about animal cruelty violations.
  • Educating the community through public speaking, blog posts, and educational programs on humane agriculture.
  • Engaging with animal owners to improve treatment and educate on proper care standards.
A typical month might include

Investigating a complaint about abused chickens, testifying in court, researching factory farm conditions by reviewing undercover footage, giving a community talk on poultry welfare, and working with our legal team to prepare evidence for an upcoming case. We promise it won't be dull!

Frequently Asked Questions
  • What does a typical week look like? Your schedule will be flexible and variable. Some weeks might involve fieldwork investigating complaints and documenting conditions. Other weeks could focus on research, case preparation, or court appearances. You'll have autonomy to structure your time around investigations and LIC's priorities.
  • What training will LIC provide? We'll support you through all state‑mandated training requirements, including courses under Corporation Code section 14502 and Penal Code section 832. We'll also provide ongoing mentorship and resources to develop your expertise in farmed animal welfare and agricultural law enforcement.
  • Is the schedule truly flexible? Yes! As long as you're responsive to urgent situations and meet your commitments, you'll have significant flexibility in when and how you work. Some investigations will require specific timing, but we'll work around your availability whenever possible.
  • How much travel is required? It varies based on where cases arise. We address cruelty across California, so you should be prepared for occasional day trips or overnight travel. All travel expenses are fully covered by LIC.
  • What's the hiring timeline? We're accepting applications on a rolling basis. We'll contact qualified candidates within 10 business days of receiving your application. The full hiring process includes interviews, background checks, and verification of credentials.
